. CHAPTER 4 — The Boy Who Refused to Be Silent

The ambulance arrived with two police cars behind it.
Paramedics wrapped Amelia in a silver emergency blanket and checked her pulse while Daniel crouched beside her, one hand on her shoulder, the other holding Noah against him. The boy would not stop crying. Every time Vanessa moved, Noah flinched and pointed at her again.
“She pushed her,” he kept saying. “She pushed Amelia.”
One officer, a woman named Ruiz, knelt in front of him. “Noah, I need you to breathe. Can you tell me exactly what you saw?”
Noah wiped his face with both fists. “Vanessa was yelling. She said the baby trapped Dad. Amelia said the baby was wanted. Then Vanessa put both hands on her and pushed her into the pool.”
Vanessa made a wounded sound. “This is ridiculous. He’s traumatized. Children invent things.”
Officer Ruiz looked up. “Ma’am, do not interrupt him.”
The sentence was calm, but Vanessa heard the warning inside it.
Daniel’s eyes remained on Noah. His son had always been gentle, almost shy. After losing his first mother, Noah had clung to quiet places and soft voices. Amelia had been the first person who could calm his nightmares. She sat outside his door during storms. She learned the bedtime song his mother used to sing. She never tried to replace anyone. She simply stayed.
And Vanessa had known that.
She had hated it.
A paramedic asked Amelia if she could feel any sharp pain. Amelia nodded toward her lower abdomen, frightened.
Daniel’s face changed. “We need to go now.”
“We’re taking her to St. Matthew’s,” the paramedic said.
Daniel turned to Officer Ruiz. “I’ll give a statement at the hospital.”
Ruiz glanced toward the mansion. “Do you have security cameras covering the pool?”
Vanessa answered too quickly. “No. The garden cameras have been broken for weeks.”
The estate manager, Mr. Hale, stepped forward from behind the guests. He was an older man who had served Daniel’s family for twenty years, and his voice carried quiet authority.
“That isn’t true,” he said.
Vanessa froze.
Mr. Hale looked at Daniel. “The pool camera was repaired yesterday morning. I can retrieve the footage.”
A ripple moved through the crowd.
Vanessa’s lips parted, but no words came.
Daniel stared at her for one long second, then lifted Amelia’s hand and pressed it to his mouth.
“Go with them,” Amelia whispered. “Please don’t leave Noah.”
Daniel looked at his son, then at his wife.
“I’m not leaving either of you,” he said.
Behind them, Officer Ruiz turned to Vanessa.
May you like
“Ma’am, you’ll remain here.”
For the first time that day, Vanessa looked truly afraid.
