. CHAPTER 1 — The Kick No One Expected
The kick landed before anyone in the Monroe mansion could pretend it was “just another family argument.”
Khloe Thorne hit the marble floor on her side, one hand catching the cold stone, the other wrapping instinctively around her pregnant belly. The air left her lungs in a thin, broken gasp. Above her, Vanessa Vale stood in a red velvet dress that looked too expensive for a woman who had just used her golden heel like a weapon.
“You don’t belong here,” Vanessa whispered, her smile trembling with pleasure. “Not in this house. Not in this family. Not with that baby.”
The grand foyer glittered around them with chandeliers, polished railings, and white roses arranged for a charity dinner that would begin in less than an hour. Staff members had been dismissed. The security team was outside. Vanessa had chosen the timing carefully.
Khloe tried to lift herself, but her knees shook. She could still hear Ethan’s voice from that morning, warm and hopeful: “Rest today, okay? No stress. I’ll handle my mother’s guests.”
But Ethan was not there. He had been called to the city by an emergency board meeting. Or so Vanessa had told her.
Khloe looked toward the front doors. “Please,” she breathed. “Think of my baby.”
Vanessa stepped closer until the sharp gold point of her heel hovered beside Khloe’s trembling fingers. “Your baby?” she said. “You mean the little accident that ruined Ethan’s life?”
The words hurt more than the fall.
Khloe had endured whispers since the day Ethan Monroe married her. She had heard wealthy women call her “the nurse,” “the mistake,” “the girl he rescued.” She had smiled through dinner parties, stayed polite during insults, and made herself small in rooms built for people who believed money made them taller.
But now Vanessa had crossed a line no apology could repair.
Khloe reached for the edge of a side table. Her palm brushed a small security control panel hidden near the wall. A red dot blinked above the staircase from a dome camera she had never noticed before.
Vanessa noticed Khloe looking.
Her smile faded for half a second.
Then she laughed.
“Don’t be stupid,” Vanessa said. “Ethan trusts me more than he trusts you.”
Outside, tires screamed against the driveway.
May you like
The front doors burst open.
And Ethan Monroe walked in with the kind of expression that made the chandelier seem to stop shining.
