. CHAPTER 9 — What Khloe Chose

The next morning, sunlight fell gently across Khloe’s hospital bed.

The doctor had good news: the baby was safe, Khloe needed rest, and Ethan needed to stop asking the same question in five different medical words because the answer would not change.

Khloe laughed so hard she had to hold her belly.

Ethan did not apologize.

Walter visited with a bouquet so large it looked like he had robbed a botanical garden. Behind him came Mrs. Alvarez carrying soup, clean clothes, and a tiny knitted hat she claimed was “not finished,” though it was perfect.

Khloe touched the hat and cried.

“Pregnancy hormones,” she said quickly.

Ethan sat beside her. “Or normal human emotion after being assaulted, hospitalized, and promoted in twenty-four hours.”

“Don’t make it sound like a LinkedIn update.”

Walter chuckled. It startled everyone, including him.

Later, when they were alone, Ethan placed the folder on Khloe’s bed tray. “You don’t have to accept this.”

Khloe looked at the documents. The mansion. The foundation. The medical trust. A whole future waiting behind legal language.

“I don’t want it because Vanessa wanted it,” she said.

“I know.”

“I don’t want revenge.”

“I know that too.”

She ran her fingers over the first page. “But I do want that hospital wing your father promised and never finished. The one for mothers who have nowhere safe to go.”

Ethan’s expression shifted from worry to wonder.

Khloe continued, “I want a staff fund for the people who keep rich houses standing while rich people pretend they built them alone. I want cameras in places where vulnerable people are often not believed. And I want your father to stop naming buildings after himself.”

Ethan smiled. “That last one may require divine intervention.”

“We’ll start with legal.”

He kissed her hand. “You’re really going to do this?”

Khloe looked toward the window, where morning turned the city gold.

“Vanessa thought the house made her powerful,” she said. “Maybe power is what you build after someone tries to break you.”

The baby moved again, stronger this time.

May you like

Khloe laughed through tears.

“And apparently,” she whispered, “our child agrees.”
