. CHAPTER 7 — The Lie That Started Years Ago

Khloe did not belong in the waiting room, and every doctor in the hospital would have agreed.

But Khloe had spent her life in hospitals. She knew the difference between pain that demanded surrender and pain that allowed a few steps. She wanted answers before fear swallowed her whole.

Ethan wrapped his arm around her waist. “You should be in bed.”

“I will be,” she said. “After this.”

Walter watched her with the proud sadness of a man who recognized courage and wished it were unnecessary.

Vanessa, however, looked as if Khloe had risen from the grave purely to ruin her.

“This is absurd,” Vanessa snapped. “She’s manipulating all of you.”

Khloe finally met her eyes. “You said that when I first came to dinner.”

Vanessa blinked.

Khloe’s voice stayed calm. “You said I was manipulating Ethan because no woman like me could be loved by a man like him unless there was a trick.”

Ethan turned sharply toward Vanessa. “You said that?”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Khloe continued. “You told the donors I was pregnant before I told my own mother. You changed the seating charts so I’d be placed near people who would ask about prenups. You sent me articles about women who trapped rich men.”

Mrs. Alvarez, standing nearby, whispered, “Madam…”

Khloe shook her head gently. “I kept quiet because I thought kindness could outlast embarrassment.”

Walter leaned on his cane. “Sometimes kindness needs witnesses.”

Ethan opened the folder in his hand. Inside, beneath the estate documents, was a printed report from a private investigator.

His father spoke before he could ask. “Vanessa has been leaking board information for eighteen months. Not enough to sink us, only enough to weaken Ethan’s position. She hoped panic would make the family desperate for a ‘safe’ match.”

Vanessa looked at the officers. “That’s not true.”

Walter’s eyes did not move. “Your accountant disagreed.”

The lie in Vanessa’s face collapsed piece by piece.

Ethan looked sick, not because he still loved Vanessa, but because he had once trusted the rooms she moved through.

Khloe touched his arm. “She didn’t fool you because you were stupid. She fooled people because she practiced.”

Vanessa’s laugh cracked. “And you think you won?”

May you like

Khloe looked down at her belly, feeling the baby shift faintly, like a tiny fist knocking from the inside.

“No,” she said. “I think I survived.”
