. CHAPTER 3 — Nathan Came Home Early

“Nathan!” Vanessa shouted, and the hose lowered only when she realized who was running toward her.
The water continued pouring onto the grass at her feet.
Nathan did not look at her first. He dropped to his knees beside Eleanor, his expensive suit soaking instantly on the wet stone. He took his mother’s face gently between both hands.
“Mom? Mom, look at me.”
Eleanor’s eyes opened, unfocused and terrified. For half a second she flinched from him too, and that movement hurt Nathan more than any accusation could have.
“It’s me,” he whispered, voice breaking. “It’s Nathan. I’m here.”
Marisol was trembling beside them. Her sleeves dripped water. She kept one arm behind Eleanor’s back, holding the old woman upright, refusing to let go even when Vanessa snapped, “Get away from her.”
Nathan turned slowly.
The man who faced Vanessa was not the smiling millionaire from magazine covers. His hair was windblown from running. His white shirt clung to his chest. His jaw was tight with something colder than anger.
“What did you do?” he asked.
Vanessa blinked, recovering fast. She let the hose fall, then pressed one hand to her throat.
“She had an episode,” she said. “She became aggressive. Marisol panicked. I was trying to calm her down.”
Marisol looked up in disbelief.
“That is not true,” she said.
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened. “Careful.”
Nathan stood. Water dripped from his cuffs.
“Say it again,” he told his wife.
Vanessa’s face softened into the expression she used at charity luncheons. “Darling, your mother has been declining. I didn’t want to worry you while you were traveling. She’s confused, paranoid, sometimes violent. I only used the hose because she was throwing things and—”
“Enough.”
The word cracked through the patio.
For years, Nathan had trusted the polished surface of his life. He had trusted medical summaries Vanessa forwarded, trusted staff resignations she explained, trusted his mother’s silence as age instead of fear.
Now he looked at Eleanor’s wet nightgown, Marisol’s protective grip, Vanessa’s dry hair and perfect makeup.
Something inside him locked into place.
He took out his phone and called the estate office.

“Graham,” he said to his head of security, “bring every recording from the east garden camera. Now.”
Vanessa’s face went still.
