. CHAPTER 7 — Marisol’s Secret Notebook
When the officers escorted Vanessa to the study for questioning, Marisol waited near the doorway as though she still expected to be punished for breathing too loudly.
Nathan noticed the way she held her hands together. Red marks circled one wrist where Vanessa had grabbed her days earlier. He had missed that too.
“Marisol,” he said gently, “I need to know everything.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wrote it down,” she said.
She led him to the laundry room, where bleach and lavender detergent filled the air. Behind a loose panel under the folding counter, she pulled out a small notebook wrapped in plastic. The cover was worn soft. Inside, every page was dated.
March 12: Mrs. Vanessa refused breakfast to Mrs. Eleanor after she asked to call Nathan.
March 29: Medication bottle missing. Found later in guest bathroom trash.
April 4: Mrs. Eleanor left outside in cold for forty minutes.
April 18: Mrs. Vanessa told her, “When he signs the next papers, no one will ask what you want.”
Nathan read until the words blurred.
At the back of the notebook were copies of old notes Eleanor had secretly dictated to Marisol because her hands shook too badly to write. Most were unfinished. One was addressed to Nathan.
My son, if you are reading this, forgive yourself less than you want to, but more than Vanessa deserves. I stayed quiet because I loved your peace. That was my mistake. Peace without truth is only a locked room.
Nathan pressed the note to his lips and broke.
Marisol turned away, giving him dignity.
When he could speak again, he said, “Why didn’t you leave?”
Marisol looked toward the guest room where Eleanor slept.
“Because she asked me not to let her die alone.”
The words struck Nathan harder than the video.
He had built hospitals, donated wings, funded care centers, and still, in his own home, the woman who gave him life had needed a housekeeper to keep her from dying alone.
He folded the notebook carefully.
Then he called his attorneys.
Not the family lawyer Vanessa knew.
