. CHAPTER 5 — What the Camera Remembered

The first video was from six weeks earlier.

On the tablet screen, Eleanor sat alone on the patio, reaching for a glass of water just beyond her hand. Vanessa entered, moved the glass farther away, and said something the camera did not record clearly. Eleanor lowered her eyes. Vanessa laughed and walked off.

Nathan’s hand tightened around the tablet.

The second video showed Vanessa tipping Eleanor’s pills into a napkin, replacing them with vitamins, then telling a visiting nurse that Eleanor had already taken her medication.

The third showed Marisol stepping between Vanessa and Eleanor after Vanessa raised a hand.

By the fourth video, one of the security men looked away.

Vanessa’s face had gone colorless.

“This is illegal,” she said. “You recorded me without consent.”

“In my house,” Nathan replied. “Around my disabled mother. For her safety.”

Graham swiped to that morning’s footage.

The screen filled with the east garden. Eleanor was visible in her wheelchair, shivering beneath the thin shawl. Vanessa appeared carrying the hose before Marisol ever came outside. There was no episode. No aggression. No thrown objects.

Only Vanessa speaking with a smile.

Then water exploded across Eleanor’s body.

Nathan watched himself arrive on the edge of the frame. Watched Marisol absorb the spray. Watched his mother cry with a terror he had not been there to prevent.

When the clip ended, no one moved.

Vanessa tried one last performance.

She stepped closer to Nathan, lowering her voice. “Darling, I was under pressure. You left me alone with a sick woman and a manipulative maid. We can fix this privately. Think about what people will say.”

Nathan looked at her as if seeing a stranger wearing his wife’s face.

“People are going to say the truth.”

A car pulled up near the side drive. The private physician Nathan had called while Graham loaded the videos rushed toward Eleanor with a medical bag. Behind him came two police officers from the county sheriff’s department; Graham had called them too.

Vanessa’s eyes darted to the officers, then to the open lawn.

She took one step back.

Nathan noticed.

“Do not run,” he said.

For the first time that morning, Vanessa looked afraid.
