The False Emily Carter

Chapter 06 - The False Emily Carter

The fraud records displayed at the wedding belonged to a real person.

Emily Carter, age thirty-one, lived in Providence and had been convicted of falsifying charity invoices. She resembled the bride enough that a careless viewer might accept the connection.

The Whitmore investigator had merged her criminal history with Emily Bellamy’s employment and address records.

The investigator was Adrian’s best man, Lucas Dane.

Lucas had worked as the Whitmore family’s head of security for seven years. He disappeared from the hotel shortly after the ring opened.

Police searched his apartment.

They found blank identification cards, copies of Adrian’s signature, and a photograph of Box 417. A laptop contained the forged messages Victoria used to convince Adrian that Emily was searching for his money.

Lucas had also accessed the safe-deposit vault using Adrian’s credentials.

“He knew the key was inside the ring,” Detective Brooks said.

“But he could not open the inner lock,” Emily replied.

“He needed your mother’s trust code.”

Victoria had arranged the wedding humiliation to recover the ring after convincing Adrian to end the ceremony. Once the ring returned to her vault, Lucas could extract the key without witnesses.

The plan failed because the setting broke in public.

Police tracked Lucas’s car to a private airfield.

He was arrested before boarding a charter flight to Canada.

In custody, he asked for immunity.

Lucas claimed Victoria hired him to fabricate the report and retrieve the contents of Box 417. She promised enough money for him to disappear after completing the job.

He also revealed that Edward Whitmore had not died from a heart attack as the family reported three years earlier.

Edward had planned to confess.

The night before meeting federal investigators, he collapsed after drinking whiskey in his study. Victoria refused an autopsy.

Lucas had switched the glass.

Adrian heard the confession from behind the observation window.

He struck the wall with his fist.

Emily did not comfort him.

Grief did not erase the public cruelty he had chosen. But she understood the shock of discovering that a parent’s death belonged to the same secret that shaped one’s life.

Lucas provided the location of Edward’s hidden journal.

It was buried inside a locked drawer beneath the Whitmore hotel’s wedding stage.

The same stage where Adrian had accused Emily.

Investigators returned to the ballroom.

Under the polished wood, they found the journal, a flash drive, and one more document.

It was a marriage contract prepared for Adrian and Emily.

A concealed clause transferred any unclaimed Bellamy inheritance into a company controlled by Victoria the moment Emily became legally connected to the Whitmore family.

Victoria had not merely wanted the wedding canceled.

She had wanted Emily to sign first.
