Chapter 09 - Claire’s Missing Years
Emily asked Claire to tell the entire story without leaving out the parts meant to protect her.
They sat in Claire’s small kitchen, far from cameras.
After Rose’s death, Claire received threats.
A dead bird appeared on her porch. Someone broke into the apartment and left Emily’s crib overturned. A man photographed them outside a pediatric clinic.
Claire moved six times in four years.
She altered school records, avoided hospitals linked to the Whitmore network, and refused public benefits that required detailed family documents. Emily grew up believing frequent moves were caused by rent increases.
When Emily was nine, Claire received a call from Edward.
He offered money in exchange for signing a statement that Rose had been mentally unstable and caused the fire herself.
Claire refused.
Edward warned that Victoria would never stop searching for the missing ledger.
“Why didn’t you tell police?” Emily asked.
“The captain who closed Rose’s case was still in office.”
“What about later?”
Claire looked down.
“Later, fear had become a habit.”
Emily understood and resented the answer.
Because of that fear, she spent years believing her mother owned nothing, left no history, and died in an ordinary accident. She rejected university scholarships reserved for descendants of the Bellamy Trust because she never knew she qualified.
Claire had saved her life.
Claire had also controlled the story of that life.
Both facts existed.
“I need space,” Emily said.
Claire nodded, crying quietly.
She did not ask Emily to forgive her.
For several weeks, they spoke only through attorneys and investigators.
Emily moved into a rented apartment under police protection. She read Rose’s letters, reviewed old newspaper archives, and met former employees who remembered her mother.
Rose was funny, demanding, impatient, and generous. She could sing badly in three languages and once closed an entire board meeting because a receptionist’s child had a fever.
The mother Emily recovered was more complicated than a perfect dead woman.
That made her feel real.
One evening, Emily found a note Rose had written to Claire:
If anything happens, do not raise Emily to be afraid of my enemies. Raise her to know she is more than what they took.
Claire had saved the note but failed to follow its hardest instruction.
Emily called her.
“I am still angry.”
“I know.”
“But I do not want fear to take more years.”
Claire came over.
