The Best Man’s Clean Hands

Chapter 12 - The Best Man’s Clean Hands

The second phone had no passcode.

That surprised Rosa until Claire explained that Owen used it to control people who were too frightened to save copies. He believed secrecy was stronger when everyone knew he could destroy them with one message.

The device contained conversations with Claire, Evelyn, Grant, and three Beacon executives. It also contained photographs of signed invoices, transfer schedules, and a picture taken outside North Harbor Recovery Center.

In the photograph, Owen stood beside a woman in a wheelchair.

Her face was turned away.

Daniel recognized her left hand.

Emma’s ring finger had never straightened completely after a rope injury in Colorado. The woman in the photograph held her hand with the same slight curve.

Daniel’s knees weakened.

Mia saw it and took his hand.

“Is that Mommy?”

“I don’t know.”

It was the hardest honest answer he had ever given her.

Rosa scrolled through the phone. “There is a deleted audio file. We may recover it.”

Owen said nothing.

His clean, respectable life was coming apart one notification at a time.

Daniel remembered all the moments Owen had guided him away from hope. When a fisherman reported seeing a woman downstream after the crash, Owen called it grief exploitation. When Daniel wanted to fund a private search, Owen warned the foundation board that Daniel was unstable. When North Harbor wrote, Owen intercepted the letter.

“You didn’t comfort me,” Daniel said. “You managed me.”

Owen met his eyes. “I kept Beacon alive.”

“You stole from it.”

“I expanded it.”

“You sabotaged Emma’s aircraft.”

“That is an accusation from a dead woman.”

Mia stepped forward. “Maybe not dead.”

Owen looked at her, and something ugly moved across his face.

Daniel placed himself between them.

Rosa noticed. So did everyone else.

Claire handed Rosa a small key. “There is a lockbox in the bridal suite safe.”

Evelyn gasped. “Claire.”

“It contains Owen’s original trust amendment and the payment schedule for my marriage.”

Daniel looked at her. “Payment schedule?”

Claire nodded, unable to meet his eyes. “Half after the wedding. Half after you transferred voting control.”

The humiliation should have hurt more. Instead Daniel felt strangely clear. Claire’s betrayal was recent. Owen’s had been woven through half his adult life.

Rosa sent an officer to retrieve the lockbox.

Owen leaned close to Claire as he was moved toward a chair.

“You think they will forgive you?” he whispered.

“No,” Claire said. “I think they will remember you longer.”

Across the ballroom, Uncle Leo examined the untouched five-tier cake.

“Detective,” he said, “is the cake evidence?”

“Potentially.”

“Then I volunteer for chain of custody.”

Mia laughed despite herself.

Daniel looked down at her, amazed that the sound still existed.

Then Rosa’s phone rang.

She listened for less than a minute before turning to Daniel.

“Grant Holloway was caught at the west gate,” she said. “He says he will talk if we protect him from Owen.”

Owen’s face finally lost its mask.
