The Girl in the Dark

Chapter 08 - The Girl in the Dark

Two hundred people watched Daniel cross the dance floor with his daughter in his arms.

No one moved.

A waiter holding a tray of champagne froze so completely that one glass slowly slid, tipped, and landed in a floral arrangement with a soft splash. It was the only sound in the room.

Claire stood near the cake. Her veil had been placed over her hair again. Someone had repaired her smile, but not well enough.

Daniel stopped ten feet from her.

Mia lifted her head from his shoulder.

“She locked me downstairs,” she said.

A murmur rolled through the guests.

Claire’s mother stepped forward. “The child is frightened and confused.”

Mia looked at Evelyn. “I know the difference between a basement and a spa.”

Several guests made involuntary sounds that might have been laughter if the room had not been so afraid.

Daniel set Mia gently on her feet but kept one arm around her.

“Tell me exactly what happened,” he said.

Mia told him about the office, the envelope, the recorder, and the conversation between Claire and Owen. She did not embellish. She did not need to.

When she repeated the words The girl goes to Bellweather Academy, Claire closed her eyes.

Owen stepped forward. “Daniel, she overheard a discussion about school options and misunderstood. Children do that.”

Mia stared at him. “Adults say that when children understand perfectly.”

This time the laughter was real, brief, and sharp. Owen’s face tightened.

Daniel held out his hand. “Give me your phone.”

Owen blinked. “What?”

“Your phone.”

“You are upset.”

“My daughter was locked in a basement at my wedding. Upset is the polite word.”

Claire moved between them. “Daniel, I can explain.”

“Start with the door.”

Her voice broke. “I told Grant to keep her somewhere quiet.”

“Underground?”

“I did not know he would take her there.”

“You followed them.”

Claire looked at Mia, then away.

Daniel’s anger was not loud. That frightened Claire more. He had once explained that shouting wasted oxygen during rescues. The calmer he became, the closer danger usually was.

“She stole private documents,” Claire said.

“She is eight.”

“She threatened everything.”

The words left Claire before she could stop them.

Daniel nodded slowly. “There it is.”

Evelyn whispered, “Claire, say nothing else.”

Natalie reached the main doors and spoke quietly to the venue staff. The locks clicked.

Owen looked around. “You cannot detain guests.”

“No,” Natalie said. “But the police can decide who needs to stay. They are six minutes away.”

Panic moved through Owen’s eyes.

He lunged toward Mia.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

Owen stopped inches away.

“I only want the recorder,” he said.

Daniel raised it between them.

“Why?”

Owen’s answer came too quickly.

“Because Emma stole it from me.”

May you like

The ballroom went silent again.

Daniel had never told anyone the recorder belonged to Emma.
