The Black Ledger

Chapter 15 - The Black Ledger

The lockbox from the bridal suite contained enough evidence to turn the wedding into a federal investigation.

There were trust amendments, shell-company charts, and a handwritten ledger bound in black leather. Each page listed dates, amounts, and initials. The theft from Beacon Foundation exceeded fourteen million dollars.

One set of initials appeared beside every major transfer: O.B.

Another appeared beside the purchase of the coastal airfield: E.W.

Evelyn Whitmore insisted she had signed documents without reading them.

Uncle Leo, now eating cake from an evidence-safe paper plate, said, “That defense has not worked for me since third grade.”

Rosa confiscated his fork.

The ledger also included payments to a private medical transport company. The most recent transfer had been made four days earlier—the day Emma disappeared from North Harbor.

Destination code: SABLE.

Daniel recognized it from old Beacon maps. Sable Point was a decommissioned Coast Guard station near the coordinates Claire provided.

Rosa spoke with state police in Maine. A tactical team could reach Sable Point in ninety minutes. Daniel wanted to leave immediately.

“You are a witness and the parent of a child who has just been rescued,” Rosa said. “You are not flying into another state to conduct your own raid.”

“I know that airfield.”

“You know how to ignore instructions.”

“That too.”

Mia sat nearby, listening.

“Dad,” she said, “she has a badge.”

Daniel stared at her.

Mia shrugged. “You tell me to respect expertise.”

Natalie covered a smile.

Rosa crouched beside Mia. “You are the first sensible person I have met at this wedding.”

“Uncle Leo says that is because I did not drink champagne.”

Rosa returned his fork.

Daniel forced himself to think. The tactical team would be faster and safer. Emma, if she was at Sable Point, had survived five years. Ninety minutes was unbearable, but charging blindly could make things worse.

He gave Rosa everything he knew about the site: hangar layout, fuel storage, old radio tower, access road, and a drainage tunnel that opened below the eastern cliff.

Natalie pulled up satellite images on a tablet. “The main road is exposed. If Owen has anyone watching, they will see police coming.”

Daniel pointed to the drainage tunnel. “Send one team here.”

Rosa relayed the plan.

Across the ballroom, officers placed Owen in handcuffs. He had tried to delete cloud files from a guest’s phone. The attempt failed because the guest was eighty-two and had not updated her operating system since the previous presidential administration.

As Owen passed Daniel, he smiled.

“You think finding her fixes what you did?”

Daniel stepped closer. “What did I do?”

“You chose the foundation over Emma long before I did.”

The words struck because they contained just enough truth to be cruel.

Owen leaned in. “Ask her why she was ready to leave you.”

Then the officers took him away.

Daniel looked at the recorder in Rosa’s evidence bag.

There were still six minutes of audio no one had heard.
