Grace’s Spare Room

Chapter 17 - Grace’s Spare Room

Grace Nolan kept the spare room exactly as it was for six months after the children returned to Lena.

Then she called Caleb.

“Do you want anything from here before I repaint?”

He froze.

The room represented safety during the week he believed Lena might be dead.

Changing it felt like losing proof.

Grace waited.

Caleb chose the small lamp, the emergency-code card, and a blue blanket Hope had used.

He helped paint the walls yellow for the next foster child.

A twelve-year-old girl named Nia arrived two weeks later after storm displacement separated her from relatives.

Caleb worried Grace would replace him.

He did not say it.

Grace noticed anyway.

“Care is not a chair with one seat.”

The phrase stayed with him.

He became Nia’s friend without turning himself into her rescuer. He showed her the alarm, the house keys, and which adults had independent authority.

He did not ask for her story.

When her aunt was found, Nia left.

Caleb understood then why Grace kept the spare room.

Staying useful did not require keeping everyone.

Years later, Grace became a permanent member of Lena’s chosen family. No trust document created the relationship.

At Hope’s fifth birthday, she brought the same pink blanket from the police station, washed and repaired.

Caleb had believed it was lost.

Grace had preserved it until he could decide.

Hope wrapped herself in it and ran through the greenhouse.

The blanket no longer looked large enough to carry a newborn through a hurricane.

Caleb remembered how heavy it felt.
