The Seed Vault Opens

Chapter 06 - The Seed Vault Opens

The vault accepted Hope’s tracer and Caleb’s bracelet.

Its central terminal unlocked.

A recorded image of Lena appeared on the screen.

She wore a laboratory coat and looked directly into the camera.

“If Caleb and Hope are both present, then Margaret has failed to separate what she considers useful from what she considers expendable.”

Caleb watched the recording from Grace’s home through a secure video connection.

Lena explained the vault.

The Arden family fortune began with open-pollinated seeds collected by founder Elias Arden during famine relief work. Elias created a trust requiring the company to preserve farmers’ right to save and replant seed.

After his death, executives patented modified versions and buried the original charter.

Margaret expanded the business by selling sterile hybrids, buying public research cheaply, and suing farmers whose fields were accidentally cross-pollinated.

Thomas Reed discovered Arden warehouses were destroying original seeds to maintain scarcity.

He copied shipping records and helped Lena build the hidden vault.

The silo explosion that killed him began after he scheduled a meeting with federal regulators.

Lena did not call it an accident.

The recording contained financial ledgers, patent histories, safety reports, and Thomas’s final messages.

It also contained Caleb’s completed adoption decree.

Lena held the original page before the camera.

“The county record was finalized,” she said. “Margaret’s legal team removed it after Thomas died. The certified copy is stored in Vault Drawer C-17.”

Isaac opened the drawer.

Inside lay the decree with the judge’s seal, a letter from Thomas, and a second founder’s charter.

The legal adoption was valid.

Caleb was Lena’s son.

He was also a joint beneficiary under the trust.

Margaret’s lawyers attacked the documents as forgeries.

A forensic examination confirmed the paper, seal, and signatures.

The retired clerk agreed to testify after investigators moved her from the Arden residence. She admitted receiving payments to report the decree incomplete.

Margaret’s custody claim weakened.

Then the vault alarm activated.

Someone had entered the external drainage tunnel.

Security footage showed Warren Pike placing charges near the backup power line.

He intended to flood the vault before the evidence completed transmission.

Police moved toward the tunnel.

Pike escaped through a secondary exit, but the blast damaged the pumps.

Water began rising beneath the seed shelves.

Lena’s recording continued.

“If the vault floods, prioritize the seed collections from communities listed in red. They were taken without duplicates.”

Isaac ordered emergency crews into the chamber.

Caleb watched workers carrying crates through muddy water.

He pressed both hands against the screen.

“Save Mom’s video.”

Maya answered.

“It has already copied to federal servers.”

“No. I mean find the part where she says where she went.”

The recording’s final seconds contained a faint sound behind Lena.

Three metal knocks.

Pause.

Two knocks.

Thomas’s emergency code for the old north irrigation bunker.

Lena might not have been taken from the farm.

She might be trapped beneath it.
