The Mark Beneath Hope’s Foot

Chapter 04 - The Mark Beneath Hope’s Foot

Hope was transferred to the public children’s hospital under police escort.

Caleb rode in the same ambulance.

Margaret’s attorneys followed.

Doctors confirmed the baby had been born without clinical assistance. Her umbilical cord had been cut with a sterilized agricultural blade. The G-17 mark beneath her foot was not ink from medical identification.

It was a plant-based dye containing a coded protein tracer.

Dr. Priya Shah, the attending pediatrician, recognized the technology.

Arden used biological tracers to identify proprietary seed batches.

“Why mark a baby with a seed tracer?” Isaac asked.

Priya examined the pendant.

“Perhaps it isn’t marking her as a patient. Perhaps it is storing information on her skin.”

A specialist scanned the dye pattern under ultraviolet light.

Numbers appeared in microscopic lines:

41.0887

-72.4412

G17

NORTH ROOT

Coordinates.

They pointed to a section of Cedar Farm north of the greenhouse.

Margaret demanded the scan be sealed under medical privacy.

Isaac obtained a search warrant before her attorneys could stop him.

Meanwhile, child services interviewed Caleb.

The investigator, Elaine Voss, arrived wearing an Arden Foundation disaster-response badge. She asked whether Lena told him to accuse Margaret.

Caleb said no.

“Did Lena sometimes become angry with you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she keep you out of school?”

“We had school at home.”

“Did she tell you police might steal Hope?”

“She said Arden people would.”

Elaine wrote for a long time.

Caleb leaned forward.

“Are you Arden people?”

“I work with many organizations.”

“That’s not no.”

Isaac entered and ended the interview.

Elaine accused him of interference.

He asked why her agency received six million dollars from the Arden Foundation the previous year.

She left without answering.

At Cedar Farm, rescue teams found the greenhouse partly collapsed. Blood marked the floor near the chemical room, but no body was recovered.

Warren Pike’s tire tracks led toward the north field.

The coordinates from Hope’s foot ended beside an old storm drain covered by roots.

Inside was a steel hatch.

The brass key from the pendant fit the lock.

Below ground, investigators found a climate-controlled seed vault running on backup power.

Shelves held thousands of glass containers labeled with village names, public universities, and farming cooperatives from around the world.

At the center stood a computer terminal.

Its screen requested two biological confirmations:

G17 NEWBORN TRACER

C17 LEGAL SIBLING

Isaac looked at the green bracelet taken from Caleb’s wrist for evidence.

A tiny dried drop of his blood stained one thread.

Lena had prepared the vault to recognize both children.

May you like

Not only the baby.

Whatever Margaret erased from county records, Lena’s system recognized Caleb as family.
