The House Beneath the House

Chapter 11 - The House Beneath the House
The photograph contained almost nothing: concrete walls, a metal chair, and an old clock.
Vivienne recognized the clock.
It had hung in the Vale family’s first wine cellar before renovations twenty years earlier. The cellar no longer appeared on modern plans.
Thomas led investigators to a service tunnel beneath the greenhouse. During Prohibition, the family used it to move liquor from a riverside boathouse. Conrad had sealed the entrance after Arthur’s death.
Clara and Vivienne insisted on joining the search. Police refused until Eleanor revealed the tunnels crossed multiple private properties and only family maps showed the exits.
They entered at dusk.
The passage smelled of damp stone and rust. Clara walked beside Vivienne, both wearing helmets over expensive coats borrowed from Eleanor’s closet. The absurdity nearly made them laugh.
At the first junction, they found Isabella’s silver moon pendant on the ground.
“She left a trail,” Clara said.
Farther in, voices echoed.
Warren Pike stood inside an underground office with Isabella and two armed guards. Conrad appeared on a video screen, directing them to move her before police reached the river.
Vivienne stepped into view before Clara could stop her.
“Father.”
Conrad’s face changed.
“Go home.”
“You stole me.”
“I saved you from a woman who could not protect herself.”
Isabella rose from the chair. “You saved yourself.”
Pike grabbed her.
Clara triggered the tunnel’s old flood alarm. A deafening bell rang through the chambers. Emergency gates dropped between sections, separating Pike from one guard. Police rushed through the opposite passage.
In the confusion, Isabella struck Pike with the metal chair and ran toward her daughters.
The second guard surrendered.
Pike escaped through the boathouse exit, but federal agents intercepted him on the river road.
Conrad disconnected before officers traced the signal.
Back at Vale House, Isabella refused sedation. She sat between Clara and Vivienne in Eleanor’s bedroom, holding both their hands.
“I used to imagine you as children,” she said. “I did not know how to imagine you grown.”
Clara asked the question that had followed her through every foster home.
“Did you look for us?”
“Every day I was conscious.”
It was not a perfect answer. It could not return birthdays, fevers, school plays, or the night Rosa died. But it was true.
Near midnight, Warren Pike began cooperating with investigators.
He confirmed that Conrad ordered the fire, Isabella’s confinement, the cloned phone, and the abduction.
Then he revealed that Conrad had no intention of surrendering control.

The hidden Vale account still held 1.3 billion dollars.
And Conrad had transferred it all that morning.
