The Butler Who Brought Her Home

Chapter 06 - The Butler Who Brought Her Home

Thomas Wren did not deny recognizing Clara.

He stood in the silver pantry wearing his immaculate black coat while Eleanor demanded the truth. Behind him, locked cabinets reflected hundreds of polished serving pieces.

“I recognized Isabella’s eyes,” he said. “Not the pendant. Not the name. Her eyes.”

Clara’s anger rose so quickly that her hands shook.

“You let me carry trays for fourteen months.”

“I needed you inside the house.”

“You could have told me.”

“And Conrad would have known within an hour.”

Thomas explained that he had spent decades collecting fragments of evidence. After Rosa died, he traced Clara through employment records. Bringing her into Vale House gave him access to a fresh DNA sample and placed her near Eleanor, but he could not risk a direct accusation without proof.

“So you used me,” Clara said.

“Yes.”

His honesty hurt more than an excuse.

Thomas unlocked the central cabinet and removed a silver swan centerpiece used only at succession dinners. Its hollow base contained a narrow ledger wrapped in oilcloth.

Rosa’s warning returned: Do not trust the person who gives it to you.

Thomas placed the swan on the table but did not open it.

“The evidence belongs to you and Vivienne,” he said. “If I open it, Conrad will claim I planted everything. One of you must choose.”

Vivienne entered behind Clara.

She had been crying, but her voice was steady. “Open it with us watching.”

Thomas twisted the base.

Inside the ledger were payments from Vale Crown accounts to private clinics, police officials, and a security company operating the night of the fire. Several entries bore Conrad’s initials.

Others bore Eleanor’s.

Clara looked at the old woman.

Eleanor seemed to age years in a moment.

“I paid investigators,” she said. “I never paid anyone to harm Isabella.”

The dates told a different story. Money left Eleanor’s private account three days before the nursery fire and reached the security company that sealed the east wing.

Conrad entered the pantry with his attorneys.

“There,” he said softly. “At last, the truth about our beloved matriarch.”

Eleanor gripped her cane.

“You controlled those accounts.”

“Not then. Father did.”

“Your father was dead.”

Conrad smiled.

“That is what you keep saying.”

Marcus examined the ledger’s earliest page. The signatures were genuine, but the account authorization did not belong to Conrad or Eleanor.

It belonged to Arthur Vale—Eleanor’s husband—whose death certificate was dated six months before the payments.

Someone had used a dead man’s authority.

Thomas turned the final page.

A recent entry showed ten million dollars transferred from the same hidden account only two weeks earlier.

The recipient was a private medical facility called Briar Glen.
