Rosa’s Last Secret

Chapter 05 - Rosa’s Last Secret

The address in Rosa’s unsent letter led to an abandoned church outside Annapolis.

Clara traveled there with Marcus and two security officers. Inside the chapel, dust covered wooden pews, but a fresh bouquet of white lilies stood beneath a statue of Saint Anne.

The priest, Father Julian, recognized Rosa’s name.

“She came every year on February ninth,” he said. “She lit two candles.”

He led them to a locked cabinet containing records from a clinic that once operated behind the church. On the night of the Vale nursery fire, Rosa had arrived carrying two infants and accompanied by Margaret Dunn, the former Vale nurse.

One baby was severely ill from smoke inhalation. The other was healthy.

Before dawn, three men arrived. Margaret hid the healthy child beneath the chapel stairs. Rosa escaped through the cemetery with the sick infant.

The clinic’s handwritten notes identified the children only as Swan and Moon.

“Which one did Rosa take?” Clara asked.

Father Julian looked at her pendant.

“Swan.”

Clara touched the broken gold wing.

“Then Vivienne was Moon.”

“Perhaps.”

The records included a blood sample card from Swan, sealed in wax. Dr. Halden could compare it to Clara.

More important was a cassette tape Rosa had left with Father Julian shortly before her death.

Her voice trembled through the old recorder.

“Clara, I am sorry I never told you. Your mother asked me to keep both of you safe. I failed to keep you together. Conrad found Moon first. He promised Isabella he would protect her, but he wanted the trust. Margaret tried to expose him. She vanished. Isabella went back for her and never returned.”

Rosa paused, crying softly.

“There is a ledger hidden inside the silver swan used at family dinners. It names everyone who helped. Do not trust the person who gives it to you. Trust the person willing to lose everything by opening it.”

The recording ended.

On their way back to the estate, Marcus received a call.

Vivienne’s DNA results had arrived.

She was not Conrad’s biological daughter.

She was Eleanor’s granddaughter and Clara’s full sister.

Clara pressed her forehead against the cold car window.

For twenty-eight years, one twin had grown up believing the mansion belonged to her.

The other had been hired to clean it.

Yet Rosa’s warning suggested the worst was still hidden. Conrad had found Vivienne, but someone else had helped him keep Clara outside.

That person was close enough to control the family’s ceremonial silver.

At Vale House, only three people possessed that authority: Eleanor, Conrad, and the head butler, Thomas Wren.

Thomas had served the family for forty-one years.

He was also the man who had recommended Clara for the maid’s position.
