. CHAPTER 1 — The Boy Beneath the Chandeliers

The Belcourt Grand Ballroom had been polished until the marble floor reflected every chandelier like a second sky. Cameras stood on black tripods near the orchestra platform. Waiters moved with silver trays. Donors smiled beneath crystal light while a livestream carried the charity gala to thousands of viewers across the country.

At the far side of the room, a seven-year-old boy slipped through the service entrance.

His name was Noah Ellis. His shoes were too old for the white marble. His army-green jacket had a torn cuff. In one hand, he clutched a folded envelope so tightly the paper had gone soft from sweat. He did not come for food. He did not come to steal. He came because the invitation inside the envelope had his mother’s name printed on it, and because the woman at the shelter had told him, “If this is real, someone at that gala will know who you are.”

Noah stopped beside a table covered in white linen. A plate of untouched dinner sat near the edge. His stomach tightened at the smell, but he looked past it toward the stage banner honoring the late Eleanor Vale Foundation. He recognized the name from the letter his mother had hidden under her mattress.

Then a woman in a champagne-colored gown turned and saw him.

Vanessa Hawthorne was famous for her donations, her perfect smile, and the coldness she saved for anyone who could not help her reputation. Tonight, she was hosting the gala. A camera had caught her greeting senators, CEOs, and actors. She had just told the audience that “every child deserves dignity.”

Her smile vanished when she noticed Noah.

“What are you doing in here?” she snapped, stepping close enough that her perfume burned his throat.

Noah swallowed. “I’m looking for Mr. Adrian Vale.”

The nearest guests turned. A few laughed quietly at the sight of his dirty sneakers beneath the golden chairs.

Vanessa bent toward him, not kindly, but like she was inspecting a stain on her dress. “A street rat looking for a billionaire? That’s adorable.”

Noah lowered his eyes. “Please. My mom said—”

“Your mother should have taught you not to sneak into private events.”

May you like

She grabbed his sleeve.

Across the ballroom, the livestream camera kept rolling.
