. CHAPTER 4 — The Camera No One Could Silence
Vanessa spun toward Margaret. “Mrs. Vale, please sit down. The child is clearly confused.”
Margaret did not move. At seventy-two, she still carried the authority of a woman who had buried a husband, built a foundation, and survived every polite predator in the city. Her eyes stayed fixed on Noah.
“Come here, sweetheart,” she said.
Noah looked at Vanessa’s grip on his sleeve.
Margaret’s voice sharpened. “Let him go.”
The command cut through the room. Vanessa released him as if his jacket had burned her.
Noah stepped toward Margaret, but before he reached her, Vanessa moved again. She grabbed his envelope and turned toward the security guard. “Remove him first. We can deal with this nonsense privately.”
The word privately made several guests glance toward the cameras.
The livestream operator, heart pounding, did not cut away. He had spent years filming speeches about charity while watching real cruelty happen in corners. Tonight, he made one choice. He kept the lens on Vanessa.
Online, the viewer count doubled.
Noah turned toward the camera, not understanding what it meant, and the close-up captured everything: his red eyes, his small hand reaching for the stolen envelope, the fear he was trying to swallow.
Vanessa tried to smile at the guests. “Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize. Unfortunately, events like this attract—”
“Don’t finish that sentence,” Margaret said.
A hush fell.
Vanessa lowered her voice. “You don’t know what he is.”
“I know what you are showing us,” Margaret replied.
The production assistant returned with a tablet. His face was pale. He handed it to the event director, who stared at the screen, then looked toward the main entrance.
A black sedan had stopped outside. Then another.
Adrian Vale had been watching the livestream from his hotel office three blocks away.
