. CHAPTER 6 — The Letter Claire Left Behind

Noah unfolded the final page from the envelope. “She wrote this for you.”

Adrian took the letter, but his hands shook so badly that Margaret reached for his arm. He read silently at first. Then the words began to tear through him.

Claire had not left for money. She had left because someone sent her messages from Adrian’s family account telling her she was ruining him, telling her the baby would be taken, telling her Adrian had chosen Vanessa and wanted her gone. Screenshots were enclosed. Dates. Times. Names of private accounts.

At the bottom, Claire had written: If I don’t survive, please don’t let our son grow up believing he was unwanted. His name is Noah because you once said the world needed more gentle men.

Adrian lowered the letter.

The ballroom had become so still that the camera’s faint mechanical hum seemed loud.

He looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head slowly. “You can’t believe a dead woman’s accusations.”

“No,” Adrian said. “I believe the dates.”

Her lips parted.

He turned to his assistant, who had entered behind him. “Call corporate security. Pull every archived message from the family server. Contact legal. Now.”

Vanessa’s mask cracked. “You would destroy me over a boy who appeared ten minutes ago?”

Adrian stepped closer, but not enough to touch her. “No. You destroyed yourself five years ago. Tonight, you simply did it on camera.”

The guests began murmuring again, but the sound had changed. Discomfort had become judgment. The donors who had posed beside Vanessa all evening now stepped away from her as though reputation were contagious.

Noah stood near Margaret, still clutching his envelope. He did not understand corporate security or archived servers. He only understood that the man from the photograph had read his mother’s words and had not thrown them away.

Adrian knelt in front of him.

“I’m sorry,” he said, voice breaking. “I should have found you.”

May you like

Noah’s chin trembled. “Did you know about me?”

Adrian shook his head. “No. But I know now.”
