. CHAPTER 5 — Adrian Vale Walks In

The ballroom doors opened without announcement.

Adrian Vale entered in a black tuxedo, his tie slightly loosened, his expression carved from shock and fury. He was forty-two, tall, and known for never raising his voice in public. But silence changed around him as he crossed the marble floor. Guests stepped aside before he reached them.

Noah stared at him.

The photograph hidden in his mother’s envelope had been worn at the corners from being touched too many times. In it, Claire Ellis stood beside this same man, younger, smiling, with his hand resting protectively over hers.

Adrian stopped a few feet from the boy.

For a moment, he could not speak. Noah’s face carried Claire’s softness, Claire’s dark eyes, Claire’s small frown when frightened. Adrian looked as if someone had reached into the grave and returned a piece of his life.

“What’s your name?” he asked, though he had heard it on the livestream.

“Noah Ellis,” the boy whispered.

Adrian’s breath caught.

Vanessa stepped between them. “Adrian, this is being manipulated. He came here with a story. Anyone can forge documents.”

Adrian did not look at her. “Where did you get the envelope?”

“My mom gave it to me,” Noah said. “Before she went to the hospital. She said if I was ever alone, I had to find you. But after she died, no one believed me.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Adrian slowly turned to Vanessa. “Give him the envelope.”

Vanessa laughed softly. “You’re emotional. Think about what this could do to the foundation.”

“Give it to him.”

The words were quiet, but every person heard the danger beneath them.

Vanessa handed the envelope back with stiff fingers. Noah opened it. Inside was the folded invitation, a hospital bracelet, and a photograph.

Adrian took the picture like it might break. His face changed when he saw the date written on the back in Claire’s handwriting.

Then Noah pulled out a second item: a tiny silver charm shaped like a lighthouse.

Adrian staggered one step.

“I gave this to Claire,” he whispered.

The livestream captured his tears before he could hide them.
