CHAPTER 12: The Morning Papers

By sunrise, every major outlet had a version of the story.

Billionaire Hotel Heir Exposes Family Custody Fraud at Charity Gala.

Mother Reunited with Son After Seven Years in Shocking Ballroom Confrontation.

Judge Under Investigation After Stolen Child Allegations.

Marcus did not read the articles. He sat in a quiet hotel suite with Oliver asleep between him and Elena on a long cream sofa. The boy had refused to choose one parent to sit near, so he chose both. His small hand rested on Marcus’s sleeve. His head leaned against Elena’s lap.

Elena had not slept.

Marcus could tell because neither had he.

At six in the morning, he made coffee in the suite’s little kitchen. Not hotel coffee delivered by staff. Coffee made with his own hands, badly. He brought Elena a cup and placed it on the table beside her.

“I remember you used to take it with too much sugar,” he said.

She looked at the cup. “I stopped. Couldn’t afford the habit.”

The words were not cruel. That made them hurt more.

Marcus sat across from her, not beside her. He had no right to assume closeness.

“I hired a family attorney,” he said. “Not the Hale firm. Someone independent. She will represent Oliver’s interests first. Yours too, if you want.”

Elena stroked Oliver’s hair. “I don’t want your money deciding what happens next.”

“It won’t.”

She looked at him then. “Everything in your life is touched by money.”

Marcus accepted the blow because it was true.

“Then I will spend the rest of my life proving this part is not.”

Oliver stirred, eyes fluttering open.

For a moment he seemed confused. Then he saw Elena and Marcus on either side of him. His face softened.

“You’re both still here,” he whispered.

Elena’s eyes filled again.

Marcus leaned closer. “We are.”

“Will you be here tomorrow?”

Elena looked at Marcus. Whatever anger lived between them, the answer belonged to the child.

“Yes,” she said.

May you like

Marcus nodded. “Tomorrow too.”

Oliver closed his eyes again, trusting sleep for the first time in years.
