CHAPTER 8: The Camera Above the Crib

Marcus had installed cameras in Oliver’s nursery after his son began waking from nightmares at age four. Victoria had called it excessive. Cassandra had called it cold. Marcus had ignored them because Oliver once whispered that shadows came into his room when he slept.

What Marcus did not know was that the cameras had captured more than nightmares.

The hotel security team accessed the family cloud archive from a private office while the gala waited beyond the walls. At first, the screen showed ordinary scenes: Oliver sleeping, nannies entering, Cassandra reading a book in a voice too sweet to be believed.

Then came the footage from two years earlier.

Oliver sat in bed, clutching a stuffed bear. Cassandra stood over him, holding a printed photograph of Elena taken from one of the events.

“You see this woman?” Cassandra said on the screen. “She is bad. She tried to sell you when you were a baby. If you ever speak to her, your father will know you are ungrateful.”

Elena made a sound as if someone had struck her.

Marcus stared at the screen without blinking.

The footage continued.

Victoria entered. She did not stop Cassandra. She took the photograph, tore it in half, and said, “Your mother is whoever this family says she is.”

Oliver on the screen began to cry. The real Oliver pressed his face into Elena’s side.

Marcus turned away from the monitor for one second, as if the image had physically wounded him.

“Keep playing,” he said.

More clips appeared. Cassandra threatening staff who were kind to Oliver. Victoria instructing a nanny never to mention birth records. Cassandra slamming a nursery door hard enough to make the boy flinch in his crib. Not violence in the obvious way, but cruelty made routine by power.

Elena trembled. “He was alone with them?”

Marcus could not answer.

His guilt was too large for language.

The security chief said, “Sir, there is also a file from the night of his birth. It was backed up to the same family archive by mistake.”

Victoria stepped forward sharply. “Turn it off.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You don’t give orders tonight.”

The next video loaded.

A hospital corridor. Victoria. Cassandra. A nurse pushing a newborn bassinet away from a recovery room.

Elena’s voice on the recording, weak and desperate, cried from behind a door.

“Where is my baby?”

Marcus broke.
