CHAPTER 10: The Judge at Table Seven

Judge Everett Lang had spent most of the evening at table seven, accepting congratulations for his years of public service. He had raised a toast to the children’s hospital, praised the Hale family’s generosity, and smiled for three photographs beside Victoria.
When Marcus’s security team brought him into the private reception room, he entered with irritation rather than fear.
“This is highly inappropriate,” he said. “I have a flight in the morning.”
Marcus placed the old transfer slip, Elena’s returned letter, the hospital bracelet, and the nursery footage transcript on the table.
“Then answer quickly.”
The judge glanced at the documents. His irritation thinned.
Elena stood near the wall, holding Oliver’s hand. She had imagined this man for seven years without knowing his face. She had pictured someone monstrous, perhaps cruel, perhaps laughing. Instead, he looked ordinary. That made it worse.
Marcus asked, “Did you approve a custody order declaring Elena Ward unfit before she was medically cleared after delivery?”
Everett adjusted his cuff. “I do not recall every case.”
Victoria spoke softly. “Everett, perhaps your memory would improve with counsel present.”
Marcus turned on her. “Do not coach him.”
The judge’s eyes moved to Cassandra, then back to Victoria. There it was: the tiny panic of a man realizing the powerful people who once protected him might now need him to take the blame.
June Mallory entered with the hospital’s current legal officer, who had been pulled from the gala after the footage surfaced. The legal officer carried a tablet.
“We found the archived order,” she said. “It was filed at 2:14 a.m., forty minutes before the child’s recorded birth time.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Marcus leaned forward. “How does a judge sign custody over a child who has not been born yet?”
Everett’s face turned gray.
Oliver whispered, “Mom, what does that mean?”
Elena bent down and kissed his hair. “It means grown-ups did something very wrong.”
Marcus straightened.
“Call the district attorney,” he told his security chief. “And no one in this room leaves until police arrive.”
Victoria lifted her chin. “You would destroy your own family?”
May you like
Marcus looked at Elena, then at Oliver.
“No,” he said. “I am finally choosing it.”
