CHAPTER 15: Cassandra’s Last Performance

Cassandra entered court as if it were another gala.

Her hair was smooth. Her suit was cream-colored. Her face had been arranged into soft innocence. Reporters whispered as she passed, and for a moment she looked pleased by the attention, as if fame were fame even when it came wrapped in handcuffs.

Victoria refused cameras entirely, claiming medical distress. Judge Everett Lang resigned before the first hearing, but resignation did not save him from indictment.

Cassandra’s attorney argued that she had been young, pressured by Victoria, and acting under the belief that Elena was dangerous. Cassandra lowered her eyes at the right moments. She dabbed tears with a folded tissue. She glanced once toward Marcus as though expecting him to remember the woman he almost married.

He remembered everything.

That was why he did not look away.

Then the prosecution played the nursery footage.

Cassandra’s performance collapsed frame by frame.

The courtroom watched her tell a four-year-old boy that his mother had tried to sell him. They watched her threaten nannies. They heard her recorded voice ordering someone to delete footage. They saw the hospital transfer video and the forged order signed before Oliver’s birth.

Elena sat with her hands folded so tightly her knuckles whitened.

Oliver was not in the courtroom. Marcus and Elena had agreed he had suffered enough adult ugliness. But his absence made the footage worse, because everyone imagined the small boy alone with those voices.

When Elena testified, Cassandra stared at the table.

Elena described the first time she saw Oliver again from behind a dessert cart. “He was holding a blue balloon,” she said. “I wanted to run to him, but security knew my face by then. So I stood there and memorized how tall he had gotten.”

The courtroom was silent.

Cassandra’s attorney tried to suggest Elena had become obsessed.

Elena turned toward the jury.

“A mother searching for her stolen child is not obsession,” she said. “It is love with nowhere safe to stand.”

That sentence appeared in every headline the next morning.
