. CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Everyone Wanted to Blame

Three months earlier, Claire Monroe had walked into the Harrington mansion carrying a nurse’s bag, a lunchbox, and the kind of hope poor women are often punished for having.
Richard Harrington’s wife, Amelia, had died two years before in a car crash that left his family with questions no one dared ask aloud. His young daughter, Sophie, had become withdrawn afterward, refusing most adults except Claire. Claire had been hired to care for Sophie during the long evenings when Richard traveled and Vanessa controlled the house like a queen guarding a throne.
At first, the mansion seemed like a blessing. Lila had a small room beside her mother’s. Claire had steady pay. Sophie smiled again when Lila shared crayons with her on the kitchen floor. Richard was distant but polite, always watching Claire as if she reminded him of something he had lost.
Then Vanessa began to notice.
She hated how Sophie reached for Claire. She hated how Richard thanked Claire. Most of all, she hated that Claire had found Amelia’s old medical file tucked behind loose paneling in the nursery closet.
The file did not prove murder, but it proved fear. Amelia had written notes before her death: changes to her medication, strange phone calls, missing documents, Vanessa’s name repeated again and again in trembling handwriting.
Claire should have handed the file to Richard immediately. But the night she found it, Vanessa appeared behind her in the nursery doorway.
“You have a daughter,” Vanessa said softly. “Remember that before you become brave.”
After that, things vanished. Jewelry appeared in Claire’s drawer. Forged emails surfaced on Richard’s laptop. Security footage disappeared from the mansion server. Claire begged Richard to believe her, but Vanessa cried first, and rich tears travel faster than truth.
When police came, Lila watched from the stairs as her mother was handcuffed.
Claire did not scream. She only looked up and mouthed one word.
“Teddy.”

Lila understood. Her mother had sewn a tiny hidden camera inside Lila’s old bear weeks before, after Vanessa’s threats grew worse. It was still recording from the shelf in the nursery.
And now, in court, Lila had brought the last thing Vanessa had forgotten to destroy.
