. CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Had Believed the Wrong Tears
Richard Harrington had built hotels in six countries, negotiated with governors, and broken competitors with a glance. But watching that video, he felt like a foolish old man who had handed his house keys to a snake.
He remembered Claire’s face the night of the arrest. Not guilty fear. Betrayal. He remembered Lila crying on the stairs while Vanessa held Sophie back and said, “Don’t look at them. Trash always makes a scene when it is taken out.”
He had heard the cruelty and called it grief.
“Your Honor,” Richard said, voice rough, “I request that this proceeding stop immediately.”
The prosecutor snapped upright. “Mr. Harrington is not counsel—”
“No,” Judge Brooks cut in. “But he is the alleged victim, and this court has just viewed evidence suggesting witness tampering, planted evidence, and threats against a minor.”
Vanessa rose, all elegance gone. “That video is edited. Richard, look at me. You know Claire wanted money. You know she manipulated Sophie.”
Richard turned toward his sister. For years, Vanessa had been the last piece of family he trusted. She handled Amelia’s estate. She handled Sophie’s schooling. She handled the staff, the press, the lawyers.
And every time Richard questioned a detail, Vanessa gave him grief wrapped in authority.
Now he saw the pattern.
“What happened to Amelia?” he asked.
Vanessa’s lips parted.
The courtroom became so quiet that Lila heard the hum of the lights.
Vanessa recovered quickly. “How dare you use your dead wife against me?”
Claire, still at the defense table, closed her eyes. She looked exhausted beyond victory. Lila wanted to run to her, but the bailiff gently kept the aisle clear.
Judge Brooks leaned forward. “Ms. Harrington, sit down.”
Vanessa did not.
Instead, she looked at Lila with a hatred too raw to hide.
“You little brat,” she hissed.
