. CHAPTER 3 — The Judge Asked One Question

Judge Brooks did not allow chaos in her courtroom.

She raised one hand, and even the reporters stopped breathing too loudly. “Bailiff, take the memory card from the child. Counsel, approach.”

Vanessa stood halfway from her seat. “Your Honor, this is absurd. A child cannot simply introduce some mysterious device into evidence.”

Lila flinched at Vanessa’s voice. Claire noticed and rose instantly. “Don’t talk to her.”

The prosecutor smirked. “Mrs. Monroe, sit down unless you want another contempt warning.”

Richard looked from Claire to Lila, confusion pressing lines into his face. He had spent months believing Claire betrayed his household. Yet the child’s fear did not look rehearsed. It looked remembered.

The judge studied the tiny memory card now sealed in a plastic evidence sleeve. “Defense?”

Claire’s attorney, a tired public defender named Marcus Reed, stepped forward. He had been fighting a mansion with a cardboard shield since the beginning. “Your Honor, the prosecution’s entire case relies on security footage, household documents, and testimony from Ms. Vanessa Harrington. If this recording shows tampering, threats, or fabrication, it is directly relevant.”

Vanessa laughed once, brittle and ugly. “A teddy bear camera? Is that what we’re doing now?”

Judge Brooks’s eyes hardened. “Ms. Harrington, one more word and you will wait outside.”

The courtroom monitor flickered as the clerk loaded the card into a secure laptop. Lila held her breath. Her fingers twisted the hem of her cardigan.

Richard leaned forward, unable to stop himself. “Lila,” he said quietly, “what am I about to see?”

The child looked at him for the first time. She did not look angry. That hurt him more than anger would have.

“You’re going to see why Mom cried in the laundry room,” she said. “And why Miss Vanessa told me good girls forget.”

The clerk paused, eyes widening at the file list.

Judge Brooks asked one question, each word deliberate.

“Is there audio?”

May you like

The clerk nodded.

“Then play it,” the judge said.
