. CHAPTER 6 — Amelia’s Last File
The judge ordered a recess, but no one moved like free people.
Vanessa was escorted to a side room while officers reviewed the recording. The prosecutor made urgent phone calls in the hall. Reporters typed so fast their fingers blurred. Claire remained seated, stunned by how quickly the room that had condemned her now tried to pretend it had always been fair.
Richard approached her slowly.
“Claire,” he said.
She looked up. There was no softness in her eyes. “You let them take me in front of my daughter.”
The words struck harder because they were quiet.
“I believed the evidence.”
“You believed the rich person holding it.”
Richard swallowed. He deserved worse.
Lila finally slipped past the bailiff and wrapped both arms around her mother. Claire held her so tightly the child squeaked, then laughed through tears. It was the first happy sound that courtroom had heard.
Marcus Reed opened Amelia’s old file on the table. “There’s more. Medical notes. A changed insurance beneficiary. A private investigator’s invoice. Amelia suspected someone was altering her prescriptions before the crash.”
Richard stared at the pages. “Why didn’t I see this?”
“Because Vanessa controlled what reached you,” Marcus said. “And because grief made you obedient.”
That sentence seemed to age Richard ten years.
The bailiff returned with a second officer. “Your Honor is ready.”
When court resumed, Judge Brooks ordered the full recording preserved. Then she did something nobody expected. She asked Lila if she wanted to step outside before the next part played.
Lila shook her head.
“My mom stayed when she was scared,” she said. “I can stay too.”
Claire kissed her hair. “You don’t have to be brave for adults.”
Lila looked at the judge, then at Richard.
“I’m not doing it for adults,” she said. “I’m doing it for Sophie. She still lives in that house.”
