🔴 CHAPTER 2 — A Bride Who Knew Too Much

Evelyn Hart had known since April that her fiancé was lying.
She knew because Adrian always went silent when her father’s name appeared on television. She knew because he asked too many gentle questions about old court records. She knew because once, at two in the morning, she had found him standing barefoot in her father’s study, holding a locked file box he claimed he had mistaken for the bathroom.
Their house had fourteen bathrooms.
Still, she had not ended the engagement.
Her maid of honor, Nora, had called this decision “romantically stupid.” Her therapist had called it “a pattern of self-sacrifice.” Her father had simply closed his eyes and said, “Evvie, you do not have to save every broken man you meet.”
But Evelyn had seen something in Adrian that reminded her of herself at thirteen: a child still standing in the smoke of a fire everyone else had already walked away from.
She also knew her father had not told Adrian the full truth. Charles Hart had spent half his life protecting the son of the very family that hated him. The files Adrian wanted were not weapons against Charles. They were evidence against Maxwell Crane, Adrian’s uncle, the man who had raised him after the Vale collapse.
Maxwell was at the wedding too.
He sat in the second row, polished as a blade, clapping softly whenever cameras turned his way. His smile never reached his eyes. It never had. When Evelyn was a child, that smile used to appear before a locked door, before a punishment, before the sound of someone saying, “No one will believe a little girl over me.”
The scars on her back had healed into pale, raised lines. She never wore open-back dresses. She never let anyone see them. Even Adrian did not know.
Her wedding dress had been designed to cover everything.
That morning, when Nora zipped it up, Evelyn had stared at herself in the mirror and whispered, “No matter what happens today, don’t let me freeze.”
Nora had squeezed her shoulders. “Girl, if someone tries anything, I’m throwing a centerpiece. I have good aim and unresolved issues.”
Evelyn laughed. Then she looked at the old velvet pouch hidden inside her bouquet. It held a flash drive and a faded photograph of a burned mountain cabin. Proof. The kind that did not forgive.
As she stood beside Adrian at the altar, she felt his hand trembling.

He thought he was hunting her family.
He had no idea she had brought the trap.
