🔴 CHAPTER 7 — The Arrest at Table Nine

Federal Agent Marisol Reed did not raise her voice. She did not need to. Authority, when real, rarely sweats.

“Maxwell Crane,” she said, “you’re coming with us.”

Maxwell’s eyes darted toward the side exit. Adrian saw it and moved before thinking. He stepped in front of him, blocking the path.

For years, Maxwell had been taller in Adrian’s memory than any man alive. Now he looked smaller than his suit.

“Move,” Maxwell hissed.

Adrian shook his head. “I’ve been moving where you pointed me since I was sixteen.”

“You owe me everything.”

“No,” Adrian said. “I owe you a bill.”

Logan muttered, “Finally, the man discovers sarcasm. Personal growth.”

Maxwell swung his cane, not hard enough to injure but desperate enough to expose himself. Adrian caught it. The room gasped. Agent Reed removed the cane from Maxwell’s hand and clicked open the hidden silver cap at the top. Inside was a small drive.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Charles whispered, “He kept copies.”

Agent Reed nodded. “Enough to confirm the transfers. Thank you for giving us probable cause in a room full of witnesses, Mr. Crane. Very generous.”

Nora actually applauded once before remembering this was not theater.

As agents cuffed Maxwell, he looked at Evelyn. “You think this makes you clean? You married a liar.”

Evelyn’s chin lifted. “I married a broken man. There’s a difference. I’m still deciding whether it matters.”

The words hit Adrian harder than anger would have. He deserved shouting. He deserved hatred. Instead, she gave him truth, and truth left no easy place to hide.

Maxwell was led past the cake, past the champagne tower, past the guests who had once begged for his invitations. No one stopped him. That was the humiliation he had never prepared for: not public outrage, but public abandonment.

At the doorway, June Vale stepped into his path.

“You told me my angel died,” she said.

Maxwell looked away.

June’s voice trembled. “She didn’t. She was just braver than everyone you raised.”

For once, Maxwell had no answer.

The doors closed behind him.

The wedding was ruined.

The truth had only begun.
