🔴 CHAPTER 4 — The Dress Tears

Maxwell Crane had always loved stealing the final scene.

He stepped onto the small stage, graceful as a preacher and twice as dangerous. Behind him, the screens flashed to life. But instead of Adrian’s edited evidence against Charles Hart, a different video appeared: Adrian entering Charles’s study, Adrian copying files, Adrian meeting a private investigator in a parking garage.

A murmur rolled through the room.

Evelyn turned to Adrian, her face breaking. “You used me?”

Adrian’s mouth opened, but every answer sounded guilty because every answer was.

Maxwell lifted his glass. “My nephew believed he was avenging his family. Poor boy. Grief makes people so easy to guide.”

Charles pushed his wheelchair forward. “Maxwell, stop.”

“Oh, Charles,” Maxwell said. “You have been saying that for thirty years.”

Evelyn stepped between them. “Don’t speak to my father.”

Maxwell’s expression changed so quickly only she saw it. The polite mask slipped. For one heartbeat, the old man from her nightmares stood in the ballroom.

“You always were difficult,” he said softly.

Adrian heard the words and felt something cold pass through him. “What did you say to her?”

Maxwell ignored him. Evelyn turned away, trying to leave the stage, but her heel caught in the edge of her gown. Adrian reached for her arm, not to hurt her, only to steady her, but she flinched. The movement twisted the delicate lace. A sharp ripping sound cut through the ballroom.

The back of her wedding dress split.

Evelyn gasped and folded forward, trying to clutch the fabric. But it was too late. The lace slipped from her shoulders, revealing the long, darkened scars crossing her back like the history of a war no one had been told about.

The entire ballroom went silent.

Not shocked-in-a-gossipy-way silent.

Silenced.

Adrian stared at her back, and all the revenge inside him collapsed like a house with its beams removed. The marks were old. Many. Deliberate. Not an accident. Not a fall. Not a story anyone should have survived.

Evelyn whispered, “Please don’t look.”

May you like

But Adrian could not look away—not because of the scars, but because Maxwell’s face had gone pale.

And Charles Hart had begun to cry.
