🔴 CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Raised a Monster

Adrian removed his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around Evelyn’s shoulders with hands that shook so badly he could barely guide the sleeves.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Evelyn did not answer. She stared at the floor as if the polished wood might open and let her disappear.

Charles rolled closer, but Evelyn lifted one hand. Not yet. That tiny motion wounded him more than any accusation could have.

Adrian turned toward Maxwell. “Tell me you don’t know what those are.”

Maxwell gave a thin laugh. “This is emotional theater. A tragic bride, a guilty father, a confused groom—”

“Tell me.”

The room seemed to lean forward.

Maxwell set down his glass. “Children fall. Children exaggerate. Some children learn early that tears are currency.”

Evelyn flinched as if struck.

That was when Adrian understood the shape of his life had been built by a liar. Maxwell had not raised him out of loyalty. He had raised him like a loaded gun, pointed him at Charles Hart, and waited years to pull the trigger.

Charles’s voice broke. “She was twelve when I found her in that cabin.”

Adrian looked at him. “Cabin?”

“The Vale cabin,” Charles said. “Your father’s hunting lodge. Maxwell had taken her there because she had seen documents he wanted hidden. She escaped during the fire. She carried your little sister out through the back window before the roof fell.”

Adrian staggered half a step.

His sister, June, had survived the fire but never remembered who pulled her out. Maxwell had told him the rescuer died. A convenient ghost. A clean lie.

Evelyn finally looked up, tears shining but her voice steady. “Your sister called me ‘the angel with the burned dress.’ She was four. She thought angels limped.”

A broken laugh escaped Logan in the back, not from humor but disbelief. “That sounds like June.”

Adrian pressed a hand over his mouth.

For years he had blamed Charles Hart for ruining his family. But the woman he had married to destroy Charles was the girl who had saved the last person Adrian still loved.

And he had brought her nightmare to her wedding.
