. CHAPTER 3 — A Husband’s Public Lie

“No?” Caleb echoed, almost laughing. “Mara, don’t embarrass yourself.”
The line was meant to cut quietly, but Sienna heard it as permission. She stepped closer to the sofa, her heels clicking on the polished floor.
“You’re making this harder than it has to be,” Sienna said. “Caleb warned me you were attached to things that were never really yours.”
Mara looked up at her. “Did he?”
“He said you married into a life you couldn’t understand.”
For a second, the room became impossibly still.
Mara remembered the early years. Caleb had been charming then, hungry but humble, a brilliant young executive with one good suit and a mother who still clipped coupons. Mara had believed ambition could be honorable when guided by love. She had introduced him to investors. She had moved board votes with one phone call. She had placed his name on doors he could never have opened alone.
And every year after that, he had rewritten the story.
He became self-made.
She became decorative.
Caleb cleared his throat. “Sienna doesn’t need the history.”
“No,” Mara said. “But she does need the truth.”
Caleb’s eyes sharpened. “Careful.”
There it was—the warning hidden inside a husband’s voice. Mara had heard it in private kitchens, behind elevator doors, after galas when cameras were gone. Careful, Mara. Don’t make me look bad. Don’t make people wonder. Don’t make me punish you with silence for weeks.
Sienna laughed softly. “Truth? The truth is he chose me.”
Mara turned toward her. “Did he tell you why?”
Sienna’s confidence returned. “Because I give him peace.”
“No,” Mara said. “Because you give him leverage.”
Caleb took one step forward. “Enough.”
But Mara had already seen the smallest flicker in Sienna’s eyes. The woman in red knew more than she pretended. Maybe not everything, but enough.
The door behind them remained closed.
Mara glanced at her watch.
Three minutes.

That was all she needed now.
She leaned back, calm again, while Caleb mistook patience for weakness.
