. CHAPTER 7 — The Woman He Tried to Erase

Caleb tried one more mask.

He softened his face, lowered his voice, and looked at Mara the way he had looked at her years ago, before the empire, before the lies, before love became a weapon in his hands.

“Mara,” he said. “Don’t do this. Not in front of everyone.”

For a moment, the old reflex moved through her chest. Protect him. Smooth the room. Make the guests comfortable. Keep the family name clean.

Then she saw Sienna standing near the door, fingers trembling, eyes searching for an exit. She saw the board members avoiding Caleb’s gaze. She saw Martin waiting, patient and loyal, because years ago Mara’s father had trusted him with one instruction: If my daughter ever forgets what she owns, remind her.

Mara did not look away.

“You brought everyone here,” she said. “I only let them see you.”

Caleb’s softness vanished. “After everything I built?”

Mara stepped closer to the table and picked up the folder. “You built a title on my introductions. You built credit on my capital. You built confidence on my silence.”

“That’s not true.”

She opened the folder and removed the final page—the page requiring her signature.

“You even built this trap badly.”

Martin nodded to one of the security officers, who handed Mara a second document. The paper was crisp, official, and far shorter.

Caleb saw the header and went still.

Emergency Board Resolution.

Mara placed it on the table.

“As controlling trustee,” she said, “I called a special meeting this morning. The evidence presented tonight confirms grounds for immediate removal.”

Sienna whispered, “Removal from what?”

Mara looked at Caleb.

“From Vale Holdings,” she said. “From the foundation. From this residence. From every account tied to the Ardent Trust.”

Caleb’s face drained of color.

The city below kept glittering, indifferent and immense.
