. CHAPTER 5 — The Doors Open

The double doors opened with a quiet swing.
First came two security officers in dark suits, then an older man with silver hair and a leather portfolio tucked beneath one arm. Behind him walked three board members Caleb had spent months trying to charm, pressure, and mislead.
Sienna stepped back.
Caleb’s face changed so quickly it was almost beautiful: irritation, confusion, calculation, then fear carefully sealed beneath arrogance.
“Martin,” he said to the silver-haired man. “This is a private matter.”
Martin Graves, general counsel of Vale Holdings, did not smile. “No, Mr. Vale. It is not.”
The title struck the air oddly. Mr. Vale. Not Caleb. Not CEO. Just a man being addressed by a lawyer in a room full of witnesses.
Caleb looked at Mara. “What have you done?”
Mara stood.
She rose slowly, the white suit falling perfectly into place. For years, gossip columns had called her delicate. Quiet. Fragile. They had mistaken restraint for emptiness. Tonight, as she stood between the black couches and the windowed skyline, no one in the room made that mistake.
“I asked them to come,” she said.
Sienna’s voice came out thin. “Why would the board come here?”
Martin answered before Mara could. “Because this residence is the private executive suite of the Ardent Trust. Because Mrs. Vale is the trust’s controlling beneficiary. And because Mr. Vale attempted to coerce her into signing documents that would have illegally transferred protected assets.”
Sienna stared at Caleb.
He looked furious. “This is absurd.”
Martin opened the portfolio. “We also have recordings.”
Caleb froze.
Mara’s gaze drifted upward, toward the chandelier.
Only then did Caleb look up.
The camera’s tiny red light was almost invisible inside the iron ring. Almost.
May you like
Sienna let go of his arm.
That small movement made Caleb look more exposed than any accusation could have.
