. CHAPTER 8 — The Signature

Martin uncapped a pen and handed it to Mara.

No one spoke.

Caleb stared at the pen as if it were a blade. Sienna stared at Caleb as if seeing, for the first time, that a man who promised her a kingdom had never owned the ground beneath his feet.

Mara took the pen.

Her hand was steady now, but her heart was not. It beat with grief, not triumph. That surprised her. She had imagined this moment so many times during sleepless nights that she thought victory would feel hot and sharp. Instead it felt cold, clean, and terribly sad.

She remembered the Caleb who once carried her shoes through rain because her heels had broken. She remembered his nervous smile when her father first invited him to dinner. She remembered believing ambition could become legacy if held by honest hands.

Then she remembered tonight.

Sign it.

You don’t want a fight with me.

My living room.

Mara leaned over the table and signed the resolution.

The scratch of the pen sounded louder than thunder.

Martin picked up the document, inspected it, and turned to the security officers. “Effective immediately.”

Caleb took a step back. “You can’t just erase me.”

Mara looked at him with exhausted clarity. “I didn’t erase you. I stopped letting you use my name to write yourself bigger.”

Sienna moved toward Caleb, then stopped before touching him. “You told me she had nothing.”

Caleb did not answer.

That silence was the closest thing to honesty he had given all night.

Elaine Porter closed her folder. “Mr. Vale, you will leave the premises now. Your access credentials are revoked. The company will contact you through counsel.”

May you like

The word “premises” broke something in him. He looked around the penthouse—the chandeliers, the windows, the black couches, the skyline he had used as proof of his greatness.

None of it answered him back.
