. CHAPTER 1 — The Roses on the Water
The pool behind the Hart mansion looked too beautiful to be dangerous. Blue lights glowed beneath the water, rose petals floated across the surface, and the glass walls of the house reflected the kind of wealth people whispered about but rarely touched. Eight-year-old Evelyn Hart stood barefoot near the edge in a pale cream dress, holding a ribbon from the birthday gift her father had promised to open with her when he returned.
Miranda Hart watched her from the marble steps.
To the guests inside, Miranda was the perfect new wife of Adrian Hart: elegant, soft-spoken, always smiling with her red lips and cold eyes. But outside, away from the music and champagne, her smile changed. It became thin. Hungry.
“Come closer, sweetheart,” Miranda said, her voice sweet enough to fool anyone listening from a distance. “I want to fix your hair before your father gets home.”
Evelyn hesitated. She had learned to hesitate around Miranda. The woman never yelled when servants were nearby. She never left marks where cameras could easily see. She only said things that sounded kind until the door closed.
“My daddy said I shouldn’t come near the pool alone,” Evelyn whispered.
Miranda stepped closer. “Your daddy is always busy. That is why you need to learn who really takes care of this house.”
Evelyn’s small fingers tightened around the ribbon. “Nana Teresa said I can wait inside.”
At the mention of the housekeeper, Miranda’s eyes hardened. Teresa had been Evelyn’s nanny since birth. She knew too much about the late Mrs. Hart, about the trust, about the will that kept Miranda from touching a single dollar of Evelyn’s inheritance.
“Teresa doesn’t decide anything here,” Miranda said.
From inside the mansion, laughter rose and faded behind the glass. No one noticed the little girl stepping back from the pool. No one saw Miranda’s hand close around Evelyn’s wrist.
“Please,” Evelyn said, her voice cracking. “You’re hurting me.”
Miranda leaned down until her perfume filled the child’s breath. “Do you know what happens when little girls tell lies?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t lie.”
For one second, everything went still: the roses, the blue water, the white mansion glowing under the night sky.
Then Miranda pushed.
Evelyn fell backward with a scream that vanished under the splash. Water burst high, rose petals scattered, and Miranda stood at the edge in her red dress, staring down as if she had only dropped an unwanted glass.
Inside the house, the party continued.

But across the dark lawn, a black car had just pulled through the gate.
Adrian Hart was home early.
