. CHAPTER 4 — Evelyn’s Whisper

At the hospital, Evelyn slept with her hand still curled around her father’s thumb.

The doctors said she was stable. Shocked, chilled, frightened, but alive. Adrian thanked them with a voice that sounded calm only because he had spent years mastering control. Inside, he was breaking in places no one could see.

Teresa sat across the room, wrapped in the blanket a nurse had given her. She had worked for the Hart family for twenty-three years. She had held Evelyn the day she was born. She had held Adrian the night his first wife, Clara, died from a sudden aneurysm that left the entire empire trembling.

Now she stared at Evelyn’s wet shoes in a plastic bag and whispered, “I should have stayed with her.”

Adrian shook his head. “This is not your fault.”

“I warned you about Miranda.”

“I know.”

The confession hurt more than accusation. He had heard the warnings. He had seen the small cruelties but explained them away as adjustment, jealousy, grief, the awkwardness of a second marriage. He had wanted a mother figure for Evelyn. He had wanted the house to feel whole again.

Instead, he had invited danger into his daughter’s home and given it his name.

Evelyn stirred. Her lashes fluttered. Adrian leaned close.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“Is she coming?”

“No.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled. “She said if I told you, you’d send Teresa away. She said you would believe her because grown-ups always believe pretty wives.”

Teresa covered her mouth.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “What else did she say?”

Evelyn looked toward the door as if Miranda might appear there with her red smile. “She said Mommy left me too much. She said I don’t deserve it because I’m just a child.”

Adrian went cold.

Clara’s trust.

His late wife had left Evelyn not just money, but controlling shares in Clara’s family foundation, property, art, and voting rights worth nearly a billion dollars. Until Evelyn turned eighteen, Adrian managed it. If anything happened to Evelyn before then, the assets would be frozen and contested, creating a legal opening for Adrian’s current spouse.

Miranda had asked about that clause too often.

Adrian stood slowly.

Teresa looked up. “Where are you going?”

“To get the truth.”

Evelyn squeezed his hand. “Don’t leave me.”

His anger broke for her. He sat again and kissed her forehead. “I’m not leaving. Not like that. I’m going to make sure she can never scare you again.”

Outside the room, two men in dark suits arrived: Adrian’s private security chief and the family attorney.

Adrian looked through the glass at them.

“Pull every camera,” he said. “Pool, patio, hallway, study. Tonight.”

The attorney’s face changed. “Do you believe this was intentional?”

May you like

Adrian looked back at his sleeping daughter.

“I believe my daughter.”
