. CHAPTER 5 — The Camera Beneath the Light

The footage loaded at 2:17 in the morning.

Adrian stood in a private hospital conference room with Teresa, his attorney, and Marcus Bell, the head of Hart security. No one sat. The screen on the wall showed the pool from above, filmed through a tiny camera hidden inside a decorative light fixture.

For a few seconds, the image looked harmless: water glowing blue, rose petals floating, Evelyn standing near the edge, Miranda approaching in red.

Then sound began.

Miranda’s voice filled the room.

“Your daddy is always busy. That is why you need to learn who really takes care of this house.”

Teresa closed her eyes.

Adrian did not move.

On the screen, Evelyn stepped back. Miranda grabbed her wrist. The child’s voice shook.

“Please. You’re hurting me.”

The attorney whispered, “My God.”

Then the push came.

No slip. No accident. Miranda’s arm extended with deliberate force, and Evelyn vanished into the pool.

Adrian watched himself appear seconds later, running across the patio, diving into the water, pulling his daughter back to life. He watched Miranda stand still for too long before pretending to panic. He watched the lie form on her face before anyone else arrived.

When the video ended, no one spoke.

Marcus looked sick. “There are other clips.”

Adrian turned to him.

Marcus opened another file. This one showed Miranda in Evelyn’s room two weeks earlier, removing a small silver bracelet from the child’s jewelry box and placing it in Teresa’s apron pocket. Another clip showed Miranda near the kitchen medicine cabinet. Another showed her speaking on the phone in the garden.

The audio was faint, but clear enough.

“Once the little princess is gone,” Miranda said, laughing softly, “the lawyers will have to negotiate.”

The attorney’s face hardened. “That is motive.”

Adrian felt something inside him go very still. Not calm. Not peace. Something colder. A line had been crossed, and everything beyond that line would be handled without mercy.

“Call the police,” he said. “Wake the judge if you have to. File for emergency protection. Freeze every account she can access. And send copies to three separate servers.”

Marcus nodded. “Already done.”

Teresa stepped closer, voice shaking. “Mr. Hart, Evelyn should not have to see any of this.”

“She won’t,” Adrian said. “But the world will see enough.”

At dawn, Miranda woke in the mansion’s master bedroom to find her credit cards declined, her driver gone, and two police cars pulling through the gate.

She walked downstairs in a silk robe, annoyed before she was afraid.

Then she saw Adrian standing in the foyer.

Behind him, on the wall-sized screen usually used for family photos, the pool footage was paused on her hand around Evelyn’s wrist.

Miranda stopped smiling.
