. CHAPTER 2 — The Father Who Ran

Adrian Hart had built his fortune by noticing what other men missed. A silence in a boardroom. A tremor in a voice. A detail hidden behind a perfect smile. That night, the first thing he noticed was not the music from the mansion or the lights around the pool.
It was the scream.
He stepped out of the car with his phone still in his hand. The sound cut through the garden, thin and terrified, and every instinct in his body turned to fire.
“Evelyn?” he shouted.
No answer came. Only the frantic splash of water.
He ran.
His shoes hit the stone path hard enough to echo. His jacket flew open. The security guard near the side entrance called after him, but Adrian did not slow down. He rounded the corner of the pool house and saw the scene in pieces: Miranda in a red evening gown standing motionless at the edge, rose petals spinning across the water, and his daughter’s small hands breaking the surface before slipping under again.
For one horrible breath, the world stopped.
Then Adrian dove.
The cold water closed over him. His suit pulled heavy around his shoulders, but he kicked downward, eyes burning, arms reaching through the blue light. Evelyn’s cream dress floated around her like a pale flower. Her hair drifted across her face. She was fighting, but weakly, too shocked to understand where the surface was.
Adrian caught her under the arms and pushed upward with everything he had.
They broke through the surface together.
“Baby, breathe,” he gasped. “Evelyn, look at me.”
She coughed, sobbed, and clung to his shirt with both hands. Her whole body shook. Adrian carried her to the pool edge, where Teresa had finally burst through the glass doors, screaming the child’s name.
Miranda pressed a hand to her chest, already performing fear for the people now rushing out behind her. “I tried to stop her! She slipped! I told her not to run!”
Adrian did not look at her. He lifted Evelyn onto the stone and wrapped her in Teresa’s shawl.
Evelyn was crying too hard to speak. Water streamed from her hair. Her lips trembled as she buried her face against her father’s chest.
“It’s okay,” Adrian whispered, though nothing was okay. “Daddy’s here. I’ve got you.”
Guests gathered in horrified silence. A doctor who lived nearby pushed through the crowd and checked Evelyn’s breathing. Teresa knelt beside the girl, weeping silently.
Miranda kept talking.
“She was playing too close to the edge. I warned her. Everyone knows children are careless.”
Adrian finally raised his eyes.
His stare made Miranda stop.
He had looked angry before. He had looked cold in business. But this was different. This was a father who had seen the last second of his child’s life nearly stolen.
“Do not say another word,” he said.
Miranda’s face paled.
May you like
Because Adrian was not asking what happened.
He already knew she was lying.
