. CHAPTER 1 — The Shout That Froze the Food Court

The whole shopping mall stopped when the woman in the charcoal blazer tore the orange kitten out of the little girl’s arms.

One second, eight-year-old Lily Reed was standing near the fountain with the kitten tucked against her chest, whispering to him that everything was going to be okay. The next second, a manicured hand seized the kitten by the middle, and a sharp voice sliced through the Saturday crowd.

“That is my cat!”

The kitten let out a frightened squeak. Lily stumbled forward, her thin white dress wrinkled from travel, her sneakers scuffed, her brown hair falling over one tear-wet cheek. She reached out with both hands, not angry, only terrified.

“Please don’t hold him like that,” she cried. “You’re hurting him.”

The woman turned on her with the kind of outrage that expected the world to move aside. She was tall, blonde, polished, and furious. Her diamond earrings flashed under the mall lights. Behind her, shoppers began raising phones.

“I knew it,” the woman said. “I told security someone stole him. And here you are, carrying him around like a prize.”

“He’s not stolen,” Lily whispered. “I found him outside.”

“Liar.”

The word was louder than it needed to be. It echoed off the glass storefronts and made Lily shrink as if someone had struck her.

A security guard hurried over, followed by a young mall employee with a radio clipped to his shirt. People formed a loose circle. Some stared at the crying girl. Others stared at the trembling kitten, whose orange paws pushed weakly against the woman’s expensive sleeve.

The guard asked, “Ma’am, what’s going on?”

The woman lifted the kitten higher. “This child stole my cat. I want her detained until police arrive.”

Lily shook her head so hard her hair swung across her face. “No, I didn’t. He was in a box by the loading door. He was hungry. I was trying to help.”

The woman’s mouth twisted. “Children like you always have stories.”

That was when the kitten, as if understanding the accusation, twisted free just enough to look back at Lily. His small golden eyes were wet and afraid. Lily took one step toward him.

“Pumpkin,” she breathed.

The woman froze for half a second.

Then she clutched the kitten tighter and snapped, “His name is Copper.”

But in that tiny pause, the first crack appeared in her perfect lie.
