. CHAPTER 8 — The Gala Nobody Planned

Two hours later, Westbridge Galleria did not host the gala Vivienne Cross had designed.
The champagne tower was removed. The luxury pet runway was canceled. The velvet ropes came down. In their place, volunteers set up folding tables, carriers, blankets, water bowls, and printed adoption forms. People who had arrived in gowns and suits found themselves kneeling on the marble floor to meet rescue animals.
The cameras kept rolling.
But this time, they showed the truth.
Elliot Alden stood on the small stage beneath the fountain lights. Maria stood beside him, holding the recovered records. Andre stayed near Lily because she still looked overwhelmed by the size of the crowd.
Jenna Reed arrived just before sunset in blue scrubs, her hair pulled back, a hospital badge still clipped to her pocket. She pushed through the crowd calling Lily’s name.
“Mom!”
Lily ran to her with Pumpkin tucked carefully in both arms. Jenna dropped to her knees and pulled them both close.
“I was so scared,” Lily whispered.
Jenna looked at the kitten, then at the cameras, then at Andre. “What happened?”
Andre gave her the shortest version he could. With every sentence, Jenna’s face changed from worry to shock to a fierce, quiet anger that made even Elliot Alden step back.
Jenna held Lily’s shoulders. “You were brave. But you should never have had to be brave alone.”
Lily looked down. “I just didn’t want him to be cold.”
Jenna kissed her forehead. “I know.”
Elliot approached carefully. “Ms. Reed, your daughter uncovered something many adults missed.”
Jenna’s eyes were tired, guarded. “My daughter helped a kitten. Adults turned it into a courtroom.”
“That is why I owe her an apology,” Elliot said.
He stepped onto the stage and took the microphone. The mall fell silent again, but this silence felt different. It was waiting, not judging.
“Tonight,” Elliot announced, “every dollar raised will go directly to Second Chance Paws under new oversight. Miss Cross has been removed from all mall partnerships. And the child she accused will choose the first name on our new rescue fund.”
He looked at Lily.
She froze.
Maria whispered, “Go ahead, sweetheart.”
Lily held Pumpkin a little tighter.
“Pumpkin,” she said into the microphone.
May you like
The crowd laughed softly, then applauded.
And just like that, a kitten once left beside trash became the name of a fund that would save hundreds.
