. CHAPTER 9 — What the Kitten Carried Home

The next week, Lily returned to Westbridge Galleria through the front entrance, not the service hallway.

This time, nobody stared at her shoes.

A large banner hung near the fountain: PUMPKIN’S PROMISE — A SECOND CHANCE FOR EVERY SMALL LIFE. There were no pictures of perfect pets in silk bows. Instead, the posters showed real animals: muddy paws, torn ears, scared eyes, hopeful faces.

Lily liked those better.

Pumpkin rode in a soft carrier against Jenna’s side, though he complained loudly until Lily unzipped the top and let him poke out his orange head. His fur had been washed. His belly was full. He wore a new red ribbon, not tight, just soft enough to remind everyone where he came from.

The scandal had grown beyond the mall. Investigators found records of stolen donations and illegal sales. Vivienne Cross lost her boutique, her board seat, and the circle of admirers who had once clapped whenever she entered a room. The people who had repeated her lies online quietly deleted their posts.

But Lily did not think about Vivienne much.

She thought about the box.

She thought about how easy it had been for adults to look at a helpless thing and decide it was inconvenient. She thought about how many people had walked past the service door before she heard the crying.

Maria gave her a blue volunteer shirt in the smallest size they could find. It hung almost to Lily’s knees.

“You’re official now,” Maria said.

Lily smiled for the first time without fear.

Andre stopped by during his break and handed her a small plastic badge that said JUNIOR RESCUE HELPER. He had made it with a label maker in the security office.

“Not legally powerful,” he said. “But emotionally impressive.”

Lily giggled. Jenna cried quietly when she thought no one was looking.

Elliot Alden watched from near the fountain. For years, his mall had been a place where money decided who mattered. That week, a little girl with seven dollars had changed the rules.

When Lily opened Pumpkin’s carrier, the kitten climbed onto her shoulder and settled there like a crown.

A reporter asked her, “What made you stand up to Miss Cross?”

May you like

Lily looked surprised by the question.

“I didn’t stand up to her,” she said. “I held on to him.”
