. CHAPTER 7 — When the Crowd Saw Everything

They did not need to leak the footage. The crowd had already seen enough.
While Vivienne had been inside the office denying everything, clips from the fountain spread through the mall and then across the city: the moment she snatched Pumpkin, Lily’s shaking voice, the red ribbon, the way the kitten ran back to the girl.
By the time Elliot Alden returned to the atrium, hundreds of people had gathered beneath the glass ceiling. Some were shoppers. Some were gala guests. Some were Second Chance Paws volunteers who had heard the news and come running.
Vivienne walked out behind him, no longer smiling.
The police were waiting near the fountain.
She stopped short. “This is absurd.”
A detective stepped forward. “Vivienne Cross, we need to ask you questions regarding suspected animal theft, fraud, and falsified charitable records.”
Her face hardened. “You are making a mistake.”
“No,” Maria said from behind Lily. “We did that years ago when we trusted you.”
Lily did not understand all the words adults were using, but she understood this: nobody was calling her a thief anymore.
Andre knelt in front of her. “You okay, kiddo?”
Lily shook her head, then nodded, then shook it again.
Pumpkin pressed his face under her chin.
The detective looked at Lily gently. “You did the right thing by helping him.”
Lily’s lips trembled. “Is he going to be taken away?”
Maria crouched beside her. “Not tonight. He needs a safe foster, and from what I saw, he already chose one.”
Lily stared. “Me?”
Maria smiled through tears. “You.”
The crowd applauded—not loudly at first, just a few soft claps that grew into a wave. Lily looked around in confusion. She had never been applauded by strangers. She had been told to move, wait, be quiet, don’t touch, don’t ask. Now people were clapping because she had refused to let a small creature stay abandoned.
Vivienne heard it too. The applause followed her as police led her toward the exit.
Near the glass doors, she turned back and hissed, “This will ruin the gala.”
Elliot Alden answered calmly, “No. It will finally make it honest.”
May you like
Then he looked at Lily.
“Would you like to open it?”
