CHAPTER 12: The Woman Who Confessed Too Late

The video arrived just after dawn.

It was on an old flash drive, sealed in a yellow envelope with Mara Voss’s shaky handwriting across the front: For the mother, if she ever finds him.

Victoria could not press play immediately. She stood at the kitchen island while Nathan ate cereal too quickly and Caleb held a spoon without using it. Both boys watched her.

Amelia connected the drive to a secure laptop.

Mara appeared on screen, older than Victoria remembered, her face hollow, her hair gray at the roots. She sat in what looked like a cheap apartment, hands folded around a paper cup.

“If you are watching this,” Mara said, “then God has done what I was too cowardly to do.”

Caleb stopped breathing.

Victoria gripped the counter.

Mara confessed in pieces. Regina had approached her before the birth, claiming Julian was unstable and Victoria’s family wanted to seize the Ellison fortune through the twins. Mara was offered money to report that one baby died if an “emergency” became necessary. She said she refused at first.

Then her brother’s debts were purchased. Her mother’s medical bills vanished. Her apartment lease was paid. Pressure became a cage.

On the night the twins were born, both boys were alive.

Healthy.

Crying.

Regina ordered one removed through a service corridor while Victoria was sedated and Julian was kept away by a false complication report. Mara carried the baby out. She was told he would be placed with a private family overseas.

“I did not know they abandoned him,” Mara said, voice cracking. “I did not know until years later. When I found him, he was already on the streets. I tried to care for him when I could, but I was watched. I gave him the locket because it was the only proof Regina failed to destroy.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

Mara looked into the camera.

“Mrs. Ellison, your son’s name is Ethan. He was never dead. And your husband died because he found the hospital footage.”

The kitchen became silent except for Caleb’s spoon hitting the floor.

Nathan whispered, “Dad knew?”

Victoria could not answer.

The video continued.

Mara said one final name.

“The woman who arranged everything was Regina Ellison.”
