CHAPTER 10: The Son Who Had No Grave

Victoria did not collapse.

She had imagined that truth would strike like lightning, but instead it spread through her slowly, painfully, like warmth returning to frozen hands. Caleb was her son. Not a resemblance. Not a trick. Not a ghost sent by grief.

Her son.

Alive.

Hungry.

Injured.

Afraid of being touched.

Six years of birthdays had passed without him. Six Christmas mornings. Six nights when she had kissed Nathan’s forehead and whispered goodnight to the brother she believed was under stone. Six years of Caleb sleeping wherever people did not kick him awake.

Victoria crossed the waiting room and knelt beside him.

Caleb knew before she spoke. Children like him read faces better than reports.

“What?” he asked.

Victoria tried to say the words gently, but they broke apart. “You’re mine.”

Caleb looked at Nathan.

Nathan’s eyes were wet. “I told you.”

Caleb stared at the locket in his hand. “So my name isn’t Caleb?”

Victoria swallowed. “I don’t know what name you were given after they took you. But the name we chose for your brother was Ethan.”

Caleb frowned. “Ethan.”

“Ethan Julian Ellison.”

He repeated it silently, as if testing whether the name would fit a body that had survived without it.

Then his face twisted.

“If I was yours,” he said, voice rising, “why didn’t you find me?”

The question was a knife. Victoria accepted it. She would not defend herself from a child who had the right to be angry.

“I believed they buried you,” she said. “I believed a lie. And I will be sorry for that every day of my life.”

Caleb’s tears came suddenly, furiously. “I waited in places. I thought maybe somebody would come. Mara said mothers forget poor kids. She said rich mothers only want clean sons.”

Victoria reached for him but stopped before touching.

“I didn’t forget you,” she whispered. “I mourned you. But mourning is not enough. So now I will spend the rest of my life showing you that you were wanted.”

Caleb shook with silent sobs.

Nathan climbed onto the couch and wrapped his arms around his twin.

For a moment Caleb stayed stiff.

Then he clung to him like he had been falling for six years.
