CHAPTER 13: The Press Conference Regina Never Expected

Regina expected Victoria to hide.
That was her mistake.
By noon, the front steps of Ellison Holdings were packed with reporters, shareholders, attorneys, and enough police presence to make the board members sweat. Victoria arrived in a black dress, not because she was mourning, but because she wanted the world to understand that a funeral had been stolen from her and replaced with a crime.
Nathan stood on her left. Caleb—Ethan—stood on her right, wearing clean clothes but still holding the locket. Victoria had asked him if he wanted to stay inside. He had looked at the crowd through the window and said, “If they lied about me in public, I want to stand in public.”
Regina arrived three minutes late, which meant she had expected to control the event and found herself trapped by it instead.
Her pearls were perfect. Her expression was not.
Victoria stepped to the microphones.
“For six years,” she said, “my family believed my son Ethan Julian Ellison died shortly after birth. Yesterday, I found him alive on a city sidewalk.”
The reporters erupted.
Victoria lifted her hand, and the sound dropped just enough.
“DNA testing confirms Ethan is my biological son and Nathan’s twin brother. Evidence has been provided to law enforcement regarding his removal from St. Agnes Medical Center and the falsification of medical records.”
Regina moved forward. “This is outrageous.”
Victoria turned.
The cameras turned with her.
Regina’s face tightened as she realized she was no longer speaking inside a boardroom where fear could be purchased.
Victoria held up the locket. “Do you recognize this?”
Regina said nothing.
“Of course you do,” Victoria continued. “You tried to take it yesterday.”
Regina laughed, brittle and sharp. “You are grieving again, Victoria. This child has been coached.”
Caleb flinched at the word child, as if it had often come before insult.
Nathan stepped to the microphone.
“He’s my brother,” he said.
The crowd fell silent.
Nathan’s small voice shook, but he did not back away.
“And you knew.”
Regina’s mouth opened.
Behind her, two detectives approached.
Amelia handed one of them a warrant.
Regina looked at Victoria then, and hatred finally replaced elegance.
“You have no idea what I protected this family from.”
Victoria answered quietly, “I know exactly who you protected it from.”
May you like
The detectives took Regina by the arms.
And for once, she had no door left to close.
