CHAPTER 4: The Lie in the Hospital Room

Six years earlier, Victoria had woken to Julian arguing in the hallway.

She remembered fragments: a nurse saying there had been complications, her mother-in-law Regina demanding that Victoria not be upset, a doctor avoiding her eyes. She remembered trying to sit up, asking for her babies, and Julian rushing to her side with Nathan wrapped in a blue blanket.

“Where is his brother?” she had asked.

Julian had looked as if he had aged twenty years in one night.

Then came the sentence that ended her life and began another.

“He didn’t make it.”

There had been no funeral open to her. Regina had said Victoria was too weak. Julian had said nothing, only held her hand until his knuckles turned white. A small private burial was arranged. Victoria remembered a tiny white box, sealed before she arrived, lowered into the earth beneath a winter sky.

For years, she believed grief had stolen pieces of her memory. Now the pieces were returning with cruel clarity.

The nurse crying in the doorway had not looked sad.

She had looked guilty.

Victoria looked at Caleb again. “Who gave you the locket?”

Caleb’s face closed. “I’m not supposed to say.”

“Why not?”

“Because she said if rich people ever found me, they’d send me away. Or worse.”

Nathan reached for Caleb’s sleeve. “We won’t.”

Caleb flinched at the touch, then looked ashamed of flinching.

Victoria knelt, ignoring the cold sidewalk and the shocked glance of a passing executive who recognized her. She removed her sunglasses. She wanted Caleb to see her eyes.

“I won’t hurt you,” she said. “I promise.”

Caleb searched her face. Children who had been lied to did not believe promises easily. His gaze moved from her expensive coat to Nathan’s polished shoes, then back to her trembling mouth.

“A woman named Mara,” he said at last. “She took care of me sometimes. She said my real family was dead. But before she disappeared, she told me one thing.”

Victoria could barely breathe. “What?”

Caleb’s fingers closed around the locket.

“She said my mother cried so hard the whole hospital heard it. She said if I ever found a boy with my face, I should run toward him.”

Victoria made a sound that was not quite a sob.

Behind her, the doors of Ellison Holdings opened.

And Regina Ellison stepped onto the sidewalk.
